I am thinking I would like to fish this, but I don’t have a livewell in my boat since fish I catch/keep I don’t care if there dead. I was thinking I could use a large cooler any advice on options for this ?

get a basket and keep fish in the water and when you move put the basket in a cooler full of water like you suggested if you catch some real big fish i’d suggest a wire hook stinger and hook them through the bottom jaw. not the best but it would work.

I do have a basket, there a pain but that’s a good idea thanks.
Of course this is all assuming I catch anything.

I used a 24 gallon ice chest with a 12 volt aerator pump to keep bait alive. If it’s hot out, we took lots of ice cubes and put in a few every hour or so.

Cooler with aerator work just fine, just bring a jug to exchange water from the cooler to the river. The temps are so cold that fish mortality is minimal, last year I only exchanged water one time during the day in my cooler and used 2 battery aerators and my fish were jumping out of the cooler at weigh in!

    From the FYB Rules:

    Quote:

    – Fish should be kept alive and in “Releasable” condition for weigh in. We would like to see fish larger than 20 inches returned to the water. You may keep others for personal use. All fish will be returned to the teams after weigh in.

I would wait for Eric to comment, but the way I read it…”should” does not mean they “HAVE TO” be alive at weigh in.

There isn’t a dead fish penalty but with that said I would rather not see any stiff as a board frozen fish. With that said, a larger cooler filled with water usually does the trick that time of year. If you can put a air bubbler in there even better but not necessary. The fish will keep well in just some fresh water.

My live well is pretty small. If I get a nice fish mid tournament can I come weigh in that fish so I can release it safely? Then return to fishing afterwards. I could call Everts on my way in if I do catch a nice walleye. I just want to be sure to put a nice walleye back safely instead of hauling it in a tiny livewell

In theory that would work if the person running the scales is around when you bring it in. I would bring a bigger cooler maybe and use that if you catch a bigger fish for the time being.

I would really like to avoid weighing in more than once as it causes confusion in the end.
