I spent a few hours on pool 6 today and this evening. Caught lots of small-smallmouth pitching jigs to rip-rap with good flow. Didn’t hook anything over 14″, but lots of little ones and several cheap thrills when big sheepshead sucked in my jig. We got one largemouth, a crappie, and my partner caught a nice sauger just off of some riprap. Ne eyes. We did try a couple wing dams with no luck, but I spaced out buying some leeches when I was at Gander Mtn this morning and the fish had NO interest in bare plastics. One plastic that did do very well on the riprap smallmouths was a creature type thing called a “Baby Brush Hog.” They have a nice slow drop on a 1/8 ounce jig and the bass hammered it. I think I ordered them from Bass Pro Shops (Zoom baits).

FWIW-I did locate and buy that St Croix Avid 6′-8″ MXF. Nice stick!! It was just was I was looking for. It has a bit more authority that my 6-6 medium, so they make a nice 1/8-1/4 ounce “one-two punch.” Thanks for the feedback on that.

When you say “creature-type-thing” it reminded me of hellgrammites. Do they have those out here in the Midwest? We used to use live ones to hammer smallies in the rivers back home. Ugly things, but they worked really well. “creature-type-thing” is pretty accurate. Maybe that plastic is imitating a hellgrammite…?
