We spent the weekend in Winona, MN visting my brother Paul and his wife Pauline along with most of the rest of our family.
Paul and I were intent to get out and chase a few walleyes in this area. He wanted to learn some good spots to fish for walleyes and I just wanted to be out fishing.
This was the my first time fishing pool 5A.
Since its a 3hr drive for me to get over to this area of the Mississippi river, I didn’t want to spend all my time off the river. As it turned out, we didn’t get to spend very much time out there. Just enough to get a taste of what it has to offer.
Not really knowing where to start though and knowing we didn’t have any more than and hour or two to fish on Saturday evening, I decided to troll shad raps over any good looking rip-rap areas that we came across.
We caught fish almost right from the start. Nothing great but up to 16″ long and mixed in with and assortment of sheapshead, catfish and very small bass.
When we ran out of rip-rap on the upstream troll, we turned the boat around and trolled back down stream. After going about 200yds, I got a solid hit and hooked into a little better fish. Since my brother Paul doesn’t get out near as much as I do, I handed the rod to him. He thought it felt like and alright fish and thats pretty much what I thought before giving him the rod.
Well we both got a pretty good surprise when we finally saw the walleye on the other end.
Paul ended up with his biggest walleye to date and had a pretty big smile on his face. Not to mention, he also has a pretty good spot to go fish when ever he wants since he lives nearby.
Here is a picture of Paul with his 28″ walleye.
Congratulations Paul, hope to get down here again soon and go out with you again!

Beautiful fish! But…That doesn’t look like Rip Rap in the background!

    Sharp eyes there Crossin Eyes,
Seriously, I’m not trying to pull anyones leg here though. This fish came from about 8′ of water on a rip-rap shore line. We ran back to the boat landing right after we caught it because I forgot the camera in the jeep and we wanted to release it as soon as possible. Water temps were running in the mid-70’s and I did not want keep it in the live well any longer than necessary. It was released immediately after this picture was taken at the public boat landing in Winona. Can’t remember the name of the boat landing but its right near a very large camp ground on the river.

    Looks like Verchota Landing.
