Warm Water Discharge and Lake Pepin Ice

    FYI

This is the WATER TEMP at L&D #3 for the last 10 days.

You’ll notice there was a water temp spike between yesterday and today that jumped to 35 degrees when the air temp at the same time dropped to -20. This was the first day since Dec 10th the water temp was this warm.

I can only assume there is more warm water being discharged from some place.

The rumor mill has the second reactor going on line this Friday.

How much this effects the ice on Pepin, I can’t even guess.

As always of the river, the ice that is safe today may not be tomorrow.

    Back to my number crunching….

My guess is zero affect on Pepin. In Bayport the St Croix has ice. When it funnels thru the train bridge in Hudson it opens up. It re-freezes below 94. Opens back up at catfish bar going thru Afton. Etc, etc. My thoughts are when the deeper water can well up it can be warm enough to prevent ice (or thick ice). When the current has a chance to slow back down it cools and freezes.

I can’t disagree with you Tegg. I don’t have anything to go on yet.

Although looking South from the I-94 bridge a person can see where the ice gets thicker and thinner as it turns to the WI side depending on the air temp.

This can be seen on P4 as well. There’s 11 mile from the dam to the head of the lake. The amount of open water varies on three things. Air Temp, Water Temp and Flow.

A person could assume this would effect the ice thickness in the “channel” area on Pepin.

Either way, be careful out there!

The flow also went up about the first, almost 2500cfs. Now it started to go back down.

How will this effect the open water river bite?

With a predicted 38 degree air temp on Friday spilling into Saturday, it’s going to be FISH ON!

…and of course it’s the last weekend of meetings for me so I won’t be able to enjoy it on the water.

I come on line Saturday night and there’s going to be all these reports a photos of fish.

Just a preemptive strike here… You guys suck.
