I was out on Pool 9 yesterday, Minnesota Slough area, caught 15, all keepers, largest was 21″. Quite a bit of boat traffic out there, the bite seemed to pick up later in the day when there wasn’t as much traffic. About even action on the Dubuque rig.
July 6, 2004 at 4:24 pm #311356Lawrence,
Pool 9 is as active as I have ever seen it on the lower end. Lots of Walleyes being taken. I hit a 12 pound sheepie trolling for eyes on Saturday. Thought I had a new state record walleye for a few minutes. I couldn’t troll for more than 50 yards without getting bit. I Can’t wait for next weekend.
July 6, 2004 at 6:45 pm #311399I took yesterday off for kids and today for a funeral, but I have to agree Sat and Sunday were one of the most agreeable walleye bites since the spawn…Full Moon??? whatever. I am just plain amazed with the volume of walleye being caught. Bass and Northern are biting, too, but not like the walleye. Thanks for the info guys I was afraid it was just a Sat-Sun thing and only in a couple spots, but now it sounds like it might be all of 8 & 9 and might keep up for a while.
ripperPosts: 56July 6, 2004 at 9:02 pm #311430OK, would anybody be willing to help a brother out? I just bought a cabin on pool 9 last weekend, and although I have fished the river a couple of times during the spring madness, I plan on hitting it more often now, year-round. The few minutes I got out this weekend down on winneshiek yielded a sucker, cat and sheepies. How does one catch a walleye??? No specifics, no secret spots, I plan on lots of exploring and skunking, but if someone would like to lend a hand and point a young man in the right direction, there will be free beer at the new cabin! If not, back to trout fishing!
July 7, 2004 at 2:35 am #311485Hey Ripper!
Where is the new cabin?
Wouldn’t mind helping you out after I get settled in my new house. But am rather tied up in the moving thing for a couple weeks here. I don’t do anything fancy, or have a fancy boat. But still catches fish. LOL
And oh yes the suckers, sheepies and cat all goes with the catching. Just part of the game. Never know whats on end of that line till it’s at the boat.July 7, 2004 at 3:49 am #311498Ripper:
I’m also new to the walleye thing, so I can sympathize. At least you got some sheepies! We could only manage a large gar! (pool 11 on Saturday)
If you want to learn how to catch these fish, I’d recommend spending a day with one of the great guides that post on this website.
As a busy dad and professional, I just can’t realistically absorb years of fishing experience over the course of one year or two on unfamiliar waters. A guided trip is money well spent, especially when you consider the value of seeing how its done and learning what tackle you need.
I spent a day with Dave Koonce (ecnook) back in May and while I have yet to get a limit of ‘eyes since on the big river, I have been catching some on a local lake using the very same techniques Dave shared with me during our trip. I read lots of books and posts on here, but there is no substitute for time with a teacher like Dave. There’s lots of little details that its hard sometimes to know why things aren’t working unless you get some time on the water with a good teacher.
I don’t think you’d be dissapointed taking a trip with him or one of the other guys who post here regularly and guide in the river.
Regards,
Joe Jiacinto
ripperPosts: 56July 7, 2004 at 2:29 pm #311557Hi guys. The cabin is south of ferryville, thats what’s cool about the river, lots of launches. I will definitely use a guide, a trip about once every 3 months for a year should help. But yes, time on the water is the key. I’ll keep a careful log and be sure to share the frustrations to anyone interested. I see lots of suckers in my future. I am going to try and fish saturday, launch at cold springs and fish winneshiek. Troll some raps and drift some crawler rigs, who knows???
Bye for now gentlemen!

Just out from Ferryville there are dozens of little channels and sloughs. Trolling them is always a good option. When you find fish switch to a slower presentation or a live bait rig. Wind is tough out there and be careful as there are a lot of stumps around there. Winnesheck Slough is excellent catfish water too. Not sure if you are in to that but there are 50 pounders swimming around in the deep holes. You have excellent fishing for all species on the river within a few miles of Ferryville.
ripperPosts: 56July 8, 2004 at 8:19 pm #311842Oh ya, a cat, especially that size, would interest me. But when you speak of channels, how deep of water are you looking for before you would start trolling??
Thanks all.
