Pool 11-Waupeton Iowa

We explored a new area to us today. We launched from Anthony’s resort near a place called Waupeton. Just a note to anyone heading that way, some of ramps are badly silted in from the recent floods; it was a bit sloppy getting the boat in and out of the water.

Fished from 7:30AM to almost 3PM; with nothing to show for the efforts except a huge river clam and a large gar!

We trolled rip-rip shoreline and a side channel slough called the buunker chute, tried 3-way cranks on a 1/2 dozen wingies, but no luck. Strangely, we saw no other fishermen trolling or working the wing dams in that stretch, just some guys panfishing late in the day. Managed to “customize” my prop on a rockpile too.

Hopefully we’ll have some better luck next time.

    Ouch! That’s tough Joe!

It’s pretty rare that I fish below the Cassville ferry landing on 11, and when I’m up there the mouth of the Turkey is probably the most Southish(1) place I fish regularly. Even though the river is dropping like a rock, I would be surprised if the fish have moved out onto the main channel wingdams yet.

You ever get your batteries moved? I promised I would help you and haven’t been around more than a couple days for almost a month now! In that month, I’ve seen the Mississippi from Minneapolis to Memphis out the window of a darned airplane twice, and spent four days on the gulf coast, but the only fishing action I’ve seen was an hour and a half out at Palo!

    (1) If it isn’t a word, how come y’all know what it means?

Barringer’s book says the walleye fishing deteriorates “southish” (sic) of the turkey river inflow in pool 11 because of siltation. Its a lot closer than treking up to Lansing, so I thought I’d give it a try. SO many variables, its hard to say if we were using incorrect techniques, victims of barometric pressure, or just bad beginners luck. I fully expect to pay my dues, as a newcomer to these waters, over the course of many, many trips. As with hunting, you don’t shoot birds or catch fish sitting on the sofa watching ESP outdoors, you have to get out when you can; which is tough for working guys like us with young kids.

The prop is missing a few chunks, but still propels the boat adequately. I plan to pick up a spare prop to keep on hand as the next time I “customize” it on a rockpile, I’ll probably end up needing a tow back to the ramp. I have to learn to be more careful at slough channel entrances near closing dams…

The battery location is definately the problem wih performance. My bird hunting buddy Ron joined me yesterday, he weighs in at around 180# and I had him sit up front for some testing. With the live-well full and him up there, we had no problems getting on plane and shooting out the hole. I lacked a speedometer, but I’d say we were hitting 30-35 MPH handily.

Work has a nasty way of fouling fishing trips, doesn’t it? We’ll get together sometime soon.

I may try to make it to the IDA get together later this month, stay tuned.

    Regards,

    Joe

You should definitely try to make Red Wing the 31st. I’m planning on going, might need a second in my boat depending on what’s going on with my usual partner. I hear rumors that that’s the day of his high school 10th.

I’ll find out this weekend and let you know.

Sounds good, John. With gas prices still in the stratosphere, I might just take you up on that. Aye-Aye Cap’n!.

I’ve got room in my rig as well. We’ll talk about the plans over the next couple of weeks.

    Regards,

    Joe
