Going to Cumberland, WI on Wednesday this week for a “family” vac. Don’t know much about the area fisheries. Can anyone point me to a few decent lakes/river in the general vicinity to shoot for (for for a few good eye’s)? I may try Muskies too. ….Can’t go without the boat, so I might as well fish too ya know…. Any hot tips? Thanks.

Can’t say much for walleye or muskie, but if you just want some good fishing action, my brother-in-law swears by Staples Lake. A white Moss Boss in the pads will get you 3+ pound Lm bass all day long, and I’ve seen some really good pictures come from him too, so I think he’s right. I’ll do some quick digging and get you some better info by tonight.
AnonymousGuestPosts:June 26, 2001 at 5:52 pm #230645My buddy from work recommends Little Sand Lake just North of Beaver Dam Lake off of Hwy H should be some eyes and northerns in there. Staples is a very good panfish lake. To get to Little Sand Lake, Hwy 63 N to (left on) H to (left on) 27th Avenue to (left on) 2 1/2 St. and that will take you right to the Lake.

If you are looking for walleye you may want to drive a little bit north and east of Cumberland… Long Lake and Red Cedar Lake both support a good population of walleye, and are by far your best bet in the area. It’s about a half hour-45 minute drive (and usually well worth it) to both. Long also has a good number of nice bass (both largies and smallies) which, as reported to me from a buddy, were really hitting good this last weekend. He also informed me that the walleye action on Long was hot and heavy but only lasted about 45 minutes from 9:15-10:00 pm. 16 foot along weedlines.
I also believe there are Musky in Red Cedar… however, I’ve not fished them so I can’t give you specifics.
GOOD LUCK & I wouldn’t mind hearing how the vacay fishing goes!

June 26, 2001 at 10:45 pm #230664Thanks for the info so far. I’ve fished Red Cedar and Little Sand. Had good luck at both. I will definitely give Long a try. I am willing to travel a bit if necessary and probably will go over to Red Cedar one day this week. Be back in the MN Metro on Sunday. Maybe I’ll be a “furloughed” state worker by then. … If so, I’ll be on the river Monday – AM!! ….thanks again.
June 27, 2001 at 4:52 am #230675Sorry splitshot…………..I thought I had the number for a good baitshop that could give you some of the lastest tips on the area lakes but I must have misplaced it. Anyway, that’s another idea for getting area info. Lastly, if you take Hwy.8 east to Bruce, head south on Hwy. 40 to Cty Rd “D”. Continue on “D” east. You’ll come to the Chippewa River. From where “D” crosses the river, and the next 2 miles upstream, that is the muskie zone, should you get the bug! I swear, during the week, you’ll have it to yourself, and even the weekend provides plenty of space. Just toss your favorite muskie lure into the mouths of any tribs or springs, and you’ll find your bite! Plenty of bass and walleye in there as well!! The drive is about 50-60 minutes from Cumberland. Let us know how you do, what you did, and have a safe journey!
