Now that’s dedication! If I could figure out how to mount my ice shack to my boat so I could stay warm, I’d be there! It sure would be easier than draggin’ it a couple hundred yards out on the lake!
SOME ICE i think is a bit of an understatement 4-5″ OVERNIGHT!
drove by today around noon, quite a bit still there. is one of reactors down now? ice’d over in town also and the entire back channel.
this will be a vacation for the fish with no fisherman out! !!

…That’s it mike. There is a reactor down. Its been down for a few months or more. Suppose to go back on line the 12th of dec. But then again it was to be back on line 6 weeks ago. So who knows. Does anyone know 4 sure.? rrr

Where were you standing when you took that picture?
Right in front of my camper, at the mouth of the Trimbel.
Looking much better today with one boat out.
Good I hope it stays out for a couple more weeks. Last time this happened for an extenede peroid of time in winter the ice fishing and open water bite was awesome. Water gets so cold it kills of alot of the shad I beleive.

Good theory, but the water can only get to 32.1ºF. No such thing as being too cold for shad

The guys are seeing less shad then say a month ago.
About the time the noticeable drop came, the bite picked up.
Coincidence?

On the upper end of 4 it doesn’t get to that temp because of the reactors. IT’s happened on 4 before over the years when this happens. In my opinion the shad may not be hearty enough to stay alive. I’m not saying they all die but a lot less of them are around for sure and the fishing is usually good.

Must not spend much time in the boat on the river in the middle of winter. Think the lowest Ive seen on my depth finder was 28 degrees. Our river water up here in MN is more hardy than other places.
Shad are very unique. I don’t know a lot about them, but the research I did answered a few of my questions.
Shad have to purposes in life.
1) Reproduce.
2) To be a high source of protein for larger fish.
Normal life span is 6 years.
It’s a sudden drop in temperature that kills them off, not so much the actual temperature.
They make awesome Sturgeon and Catfish bait.

…THAT mite be your theory…But I live on pool 4 and I can tell you from years of experience that the colder it gets and the longer it lasts. The shad die off is huge.!! If you don’t believe me just ask the BIG FAT SHAD FED WINTER EAGLES. They love the cold weather and all the dead shad account of it…rrr
SO your saying my theory if actually fact…..NICE! If it’s RRR tested it’s as good as it can get.
The shad are dying from low oxygen levels, not cold temperature. I’ve seen shad stuck in the ice before still alive.
We have the winter kill down here every year, just like you guys.. but its not the cold water that does it, its the lack of oxygen in the water.. PARTIALLY due to cold water not holding as much oxygen as warm. Some years its freaking COLD down here and we see no fish kill, others its super warm (like 2 years ago when we got ice for a week) and we have dead fish everywhere.

The solubility of oxygen in water increases as the water temperature decreases.
When people talk about a shad kill it is due to cold water, but does not necessarily mean that all the shad, or even a majority of them die, just a certain percentage of the population.
Kevin, not to say anything to the contrary of your thinking but Ive always thought that cold water holds more oxygen then warm water. If a minnow bucket is set outside where its cool the minnows stay alive for a couple weeks, if its warm they die without an aireator in the bucket. I’m pretty sure its not because their systems slow down with the colder temps but its just because colder water holds more dissolved oxygen. When the water is getting too warm is the reason why you see fish gulping air on the surface trying to pass an air and water mix over their gills.

So are the ramps open or what?!?!?!
Ill be down Friday
Are they open? A picture of the river would be good to. Been a week since having the boat out and it sucks all ready. This is going to be a very long winter.

‘Course they are open. What a silly question.
Any ice to break? Might come down Thursday, need to know if I can get out. I have an hour drive. Ready to kill some saugers
