Brian:
Jason here, the Ford that says Jason’s Fishin Addiction.
Thought I’d give you an update on how we did.
We started off up at the dam anchored in the 25 ft hole on the right side. I pumped a blade bait with one rod and dead sticked a jig/minnow with the other. Got some smaller saugers but no keepers.
After a bit, I decided to swing the boat to a new spot. Since it was only 11 degrees out with a wind, I decided to keep the anchor in and move with the motor. You’ll never guess whose missing a river anchor and chain!
Now we had no choice but to drift with the trolling motor. Surprisingly, the wind wasn’t unbearable. Fishing 2 rods simultaneously proved very frustrating so I switched between the blade and a hair jig.
We ended up keeping 9 really nice saugers. I’d say 50% came on blades and the rest on a 3/8 oz white hair jig tipped with both a 3” plastic and a minnow.
Every fish came between 20 and 26 feet and not one walleye.
I was also surprised to see every fishes belly completely empty when I cleaned them.
The females all had eggs in them. I’m not real familiar with saugers; do they spawn in the winter?
I would think guys could potentially harm a class of fish if they were allowed to keep those females and their eggs. I wouldn’t object to regulations if it helped rebuild the population.
Thanks again for the bait. Any suggestions where a guy could pick up a 16lb water spike system for a decent price?
Sincerely,
Jason Hoerter
