Finding larger eyes

You’re fishing a stretch of river that produces really good numbers of 12-16″ eyes. Doesn’t matter what presentation you use, you can’t catch anything larger than 16″. Spots consist of 24′ holes with rock, boulders, and gravel near the shore breakline. Stretch of river is relatively featureless with the exception of these holes, that produce really good numbers of smaller fish. Where do you look?

In three foot of water or less…… Prob best during low light times.
    Or some where completely different.

So, the bite has been best from 11am to 1pm. Yesterday’s high sun and wind still had them really aggressive in the deepest spots of the river. I assume the depth and water clarity play a big factor in that, but I don’t get how I can catch all these eyes, smallies, and pike out of the same spot, but not one decent eye.

Shallower and later, eh? Jerk baits or swim baits you say?

well i guess the more i think about it i might just leave this area all together if its consistantly producing smaller fish and no big fish, not always but in many cases on the river if you are on medium sized fish you are only goiung to catch medium sized fish if you are on big fish you are only going to catch big fish. this is not only true but if you are burning through numbers like you say you are i would probably leave the area maybe try other areas with same flow/structure and see if you can find bigger fish. allot of times when you are on a big fish spot you may only catch 1 to 12 fish in a whole day, you just need to be confident or stubborn to stick areas out for a while. good luck let us know what you come up with

I may have to find an entirely different scenario, as this is the third move with the same outcome. Though, all spots share all the same characteristics. Deeper holes with rock/rubble.

The holes are still holding lots of small fish. Made a couple big moves today to completely different structures. First move was to a neckdown of the river with lots of big rock/boulders in 16′. Lots of smallies and snags. After losing 3 spinners and no walleye, it was time for another move. Started zigzagging a dropoff that tops out at 8′ and bottoms out at 40′, marked something at 23′ and dropped a line. Sat in the same spot for 5 hours jigging up close to 40 eyes in the 16-20″ range. Biggest was 21″.

    Moving in the rigjt direction!
