Guys…My son and I pulled cranks on Pool 4 yesterday (no luck other than some tasty looking sticks), and I lost most of the line on one of my cranking rod set-ups. Was wondering if you had any recent preferences for a braided/super line for a baitcaster. It’s a Quantum reel on a 7 foot medium heavy rod. I also cast quite a bit with it, too. I think I had Spider wire line (15lb?) before, but can’t be sure. I use Fireline braid for bouncers, but have never tried it for casting. Any thoughts?

I use fireline ,Iam a bassman fireline seems to get less wind knots than the other brands I do lots of casting.
BB2September 9, 2013 at 2:10 pm #1193830trolling i use 14 lbs fireline. if you are casting much I would probably drop down to 10…
September 9, 2013 at 2:23 pm #1193834I am going to Fireline 10″ on my spinning stuff, was using 832 but was getting a lot of wind knots with it.
Fireline is supposed to be good for baitcasting too.
It casts well and I like the way it handles too.Just my 2 cents worth.

September 9, 2013 at 2:25 pm #1193836When you guys say Fireline, what type of Fireline do you mean? Braid? Or the Crystal?
September 9, 2013 at 2:46 pm #1193842On my spinning outfits I like the Crystal, being white easy to line watch and either 8 or 10 lb. The problem is with baitcasters and lower poundage braid is it likes to bury itself on the spool when a lot of pressure has been put on it, can cause jerky casts until it unburys itself.
September 9, 2013 at 3:49 pm #1193860I have power pro on all my bait casters you need to stay at 30lb test or higher to avoid problems of the line burying into the spool under heavy loads and back lashes etc. Same reason you don’t use 6lb mono on bait casters but 12lb works just fine.

September 9, 2013 at 4:30 pm #1193876What pound test do you use on the Fireline Crystal? Thanks for all these tips guys. Very much appreciated. I think I had 15-pound braid on it previously, but may consider going heavier to avoid any future issues you noted. To be honest, I never had any problems with it digging in etc. I wish I could remember what I had on for sure, but it’s been a couple years.

I always have a little chunk of wood with me every time I get snagged up to wind the line around that, then pull to prevent the digging.
FryDog62Posts: 3696September 9, 2013 at 8:08 pm #1193937Funny, I was on Pool 4 yesterday casting wing dams too. I actually have a 7 foot Abu Garcia Veritas medium rod and Quantum Smoke baitcasting reel.
I spent all of last year trying to get the line right. I have several baitcasters and have used all different kinds of braids over the years. I like braid because of strength, Low Stretch and good hook sets. However, after trying many brands of braid (PowerPro, Sufix, etc) I just got frustrated with wind knots, loops and the ultimate rat’s nest. Happened way too frequently. Started buying better and better quality baitcasters, but it didn’t matter and I still got the same rat’s nests. I tried straight fluorocarbon too for awhile but that was even worse!
So, here’s what I finally tried and its the best option for me yet. I use all the leftover braid as backing on my baitcasters now. It will last virtually forever. The last 100 feet (or just beyond normal casting distance) I use Yozuri Hybrid…a coploymer with the best attributes of flurocarbon and mono. I tie it with a uni-uni and being that far back the knot doesn’t wear out on the guides.
Why Yozuri Hybrid instead of all the other brands of mono, fluorocarbon and co-polymers I tried? One main reason – because it is very LOW STRETCH, not like braid but very good hook sets. Its also very strong and holds knots. I use 12 or 15 pound test (breaking strength is actually closer to 18-20 lbs). In a year and half of using it I have yet to get a major rat’s nest. Sometimes I use line conditioner but most times I don’t. Plus again, it is low stretch, strong and also less visible in the water than braid.
Anyway, works really well for me…better than sitting in the bottom of the boat trying to pick knots out while bobbing in the waves and swearing…
