I decided to make it a point to try the backwaters of Pool 4 between Redwing and the Lake this weekend. I haven’t spent a lot of time exploring these areas and fishing was tough! I mainly used draggin jigs tipped with nightcrawlers and leeches. I picked up a couple of shorts and a few drum in the process.

If anyone has any tips or tricks to finding backwater walleyes this time of year it would be much appreciated!

After spending 3 hours in the backwaters I moved on to the lake. I picked up a few decent fish long line trolling #5 shadraps in 8-12 fow. Before calling it a day I tried trolling some rip rap banks in the lake with small cranks and floating rapalas. I sent the planner boards in tight to shore and was able to stay very busy with smallmouth, largemouth, crappie, and even a monster channel cat.

    Good luck out there!

Sounds like you had a good day. Though I don’t have much in the way of advice for mid summer backwater walleyes it’s always nice to mix in a little exploring with a little tried and true.

Was tough sleddin for me in the back channel last friday. Found a few in the main channel but it was a really tough bite for me that day! You may have done everything right, sometimes they just don’t snap!!! Water level dropped really fast over the last couple of weeks.
