Took the day off to fish the St. Croix, but after fishing for three hours and five of my favorite spots with barely marking any fish and trolling the paint of the cranks, we pulled the plug and went to the sippi.
We only had two hours to fish, so I went straight to two of my favortie spots and was surprised how much lower the water level is… There are areas with new logs showing, new sand bars, etc. It is really my first spring/summer is hard fishing, so it kind of fun to see so much change and the challenge in finding where the fish go with lower levels and slower flows. As Mike W stated, the current seams sure moved away from the banks and out further on the dams. Unfortunately, I only picked up one small 16″er in my prior best spots when the river was higher. But I tried three new spots that I never fished before with the last spot being a gem and hooking into two of my biggest eyes of the spring all within about 10 minutes of each other, but then time ran out and had to leave to make a meeting. It was fun to learn a new spot. Love how the river is constantly changing and the challenge it is, but can be so rewarding with trophy-class eyes.
I am going to focus on fishing the dams with jigs, but still only getting fish by trolling some seams or inside of them in 7-10fow with smash shads.
