P2 Today

Went out on P2 today and fished from about 8am to 1pm. The morning was really slow. I wasn’t sure how the fish would react to the storms, rise in water, increase in flow and overcast skies…I was optimistic, and was hoping it would put them on the chew….nope…slow this morning; didn’t pick up our first fish until around 9:30. The river was definitely quicker and the current seams that worked last time weren’t as productive as before with one of my best “goto” spots not catching a single fish. Caught only only casting…all others were by trolling. We ended up with only 8 with a 23.75 being the biggest. It a bit difficult with all the debris and murky water conditions…beats being in the office though…the current seams definitely changed with the rain from last night.

I was down there wednesday eve for a couple hours and the current is strong and the water very dirty. My go to spots suck right now too.

Nice fish. Slow is better than the office. I tell you what though I give you both more credit on wearing long pants and shirts I was already sweating my butt off at work by 9am.

I know right, it was a little cool heading from the ramp to a couple spots, once that sun started poking through, it got steamy in a hurry….that is when the fishing starting picking up too.

Looks like conditions will continue to change this week with changing water levels. Good thing those fish need to eat in any water conditions.

Thanks for the report. Its good to hear someone is getting fish since I haven’t been able to get out much.

For one trying to learn new spots, that chart will pose some challenges as those eyes will be likely be chasing the ever-changing current seams and changing flows. Heading out in an hour…hopefully I will have a successful update later.

Mike, can you please post the link that you use to view that chart for us? I have been looking for it as well as one for the Croix, but all I can find are different charts from NOAA and US Geological website…thank you.

I cannot believe that I am going to miss out on this high water run. I have been waiting and waiting for this. Of course it happens right when my parents move into a new cabin on Mille Lacs. What a problem to have right?

All joking aside, I absolutely love high water and know that there will be some big fish crushings by those that figure it out. All I gotta say is, troll with your rod tips in shoreline weeds!

For those familiar with the “First World Problem” meme, enjoy…

I know your pain first hand. Wife and I bought a cabin on Mille Lacs last December. Been mostly watching P2 from the sidelines as my boat has been up there since opener.

By the way, Good Thing Walleyes Don’t Bite in High Water!

A buddy and I were able to make it out to Pool 2 Saturday after the storms. We decided to sleep in until the rain was done and then hit the water. Here is a picture of my buddy with the first fish of the day. This one went 27 inches.

Well, I went out today, fished three hours, and pulled the plug….came home with my tail between the legs…skunked…it has been a long time since that has happened…but it gets me wanting to get back out there and defeat that striped-pile of stink.

I head back out on P2 to spots that have been producing for the last three weeks. There was sooooo much debris in the water from the storms still. I have never seen so many trees, branches, stumps, logs, floating…some as long as 45’+! I stopped and picked up four more smash shads knowing I would at least one..but ended up losing two in the first 15 min. I am sure there is just as much debris below the surface as above.

Was able to mark some fish in the 6-9fow, but could not get a taker to save me. I threw it all at them, various cranks, various colors, plastics, swim baits, etc and then started all over again but from a different angle to present it to the eyes to see if that worked. Then went even shallower..in a weedy spot where the weeds grow about 1′ to 2′ from the bottom in about 3-6fow in slack current inside the inner current seam. On my first cast, a bunch of bait fish broke the surface and scattered. I thought for sure there would be some hungry eyes lurking around the area. Nothing.. after spending 30 minutes casting.
Moved to the inner side of a wingdam and could mark some, but not a lot of scattered fish behind, on top, in front of and within about 10 yards of the bottom front of the dam…threw it all at them from all directions again…no takers.
After two cigars, a sunburn, lost cranks, having to play debris-dodgeball, and trying everything in my arsenal…it was time to go.
The water clarity was about 10-11″ most of the time and even less at times.

Nice video John…I hope to figure out the high water walleyes, although it looks like I could drink that water in the video compared to what I had today…hopefully it will clear up a bit in the days to come.

The water levels when we shot that clip where up there pretty good. Seem to remember the main ramps where closed and we where launching at Willies. That was some good fishing.

Those fish still need to feed in high or muddy water. It can take some work to search out the small areas they are active in. The reward is that once you find those areas there is a good chance many walleyes are using the same spot.

So how are the ramps right now? I forget at what level they typically start shutting them down. Anyone been by them in the last few days?
