I’ve never fished pool 3 in my life but I’m thinking this may be fathers day gift to myself. No kids and a full day of fishing for Walleyes.
    Couple of questions:
    1. Where are the best launches to fish P3?
    2. Any general areas that one could point towards? i.e. amI mostly looking for wing dams on P3 or rip rap and trolling or something else?

    Thanks in advance.

There is a ramp in Hastings just below the dam that was just redone this winter and is really nice. No dock though, so you have to beach your boat in the sand, and it is right in the main channel. Jaques’ landing is the “public” landing in Prescott Wisconsin where the cheddar heads fleece you for some ungodly amount to use the ramp (it’s getting close to $20 now). There’s a small ramp in Diamond Bluff WI that is $3 to launch. Down by Treasure Island there is a free ramp in sturgeon lake with a dock that is out of the current. If you have a map chip most all dams are marked.

Hey Micah! There are wingdams up the wazoo! you will have no trouble finding them and you know how to read them. So I would expect you will have a very good time. Have fun!

Depending if you want to fish on the bottom or the top of the pool, I would suggest the Casino put-in that I believe is maintained by the Army Core of Engineers or in Hastings. There are wing dams all down the pool. Too many, in fact. Good luck picking the right ones. There is rip-rap throughout the pool.

Crawdaddy covered the major ramps. I like the Sturgeon Lake ramp for the lower end of the pool. Mostly cause it’s close but it’s also in decent shape, has decent parking, decent dock, etc. Unfortunately wherever the walleye are at the lower end of pool 3 this year is where I ain’t. Four outings since mid May so far netted only one small sauger. Water’s still a bit high but coming down. Not sure how long it takes for them to filter back downstream after the spawn but they sure seem sparse to me this year so far. I’ve been thinking about hitting the upper end of the pool myself and work down till I find fish.

This time of the year, don’t miss the narrow cuts between sandpiles below Pine Bend…shallow water there holds trophy photo (was C/Release pool last time we visited) saugies.
Watch those wing-dams, especially on the “lake” above Nininger cliffs. Water is high and gommint boys in charge of the bouys…well, watch your charts, sonar and proceed slowly until you know the waters.

There is also the Hastings Marina. Just follow 2nd street East till it ends >here< . Last time I launched there it was $10 but in my opinion it is worth it because it is an excellent high water ramp and has 2 docks. The Prescott launch can be difficult in high water because the top part of the ramp has a low slope so you may have to get your feet wet.

If you are fishing pool 3 above Prescott you will need to follow the inland water rules and below Prescott you follow WI/MN boarder water rules. Main difference this time of year is 1 rod for inland and 2 rods on boarder waters.

There are many wing dams to explore down river from Prescott. With the high water I would look for slack areas along shorelines and around the islands.
