I spent a couple days prefishing and then fished the Pooh Bear Open Saturday and thought I would throw a quick report on here. We stayed at Everts and it was a blast to get to hang out in the bait shop and shoot the bull with Steve and Kari. We went searching in the back channel Thursday and found a few short fish and way to many sheephead. The wind was really blowing Friday but we ventured to the head of the lake and found Denver rigs were putting out some decent fish. The plastic was catching the majority of the fish that day with the Bay City Flats and the Can line holding fish. We tried crawlers in every location we caught fish and never got a crawler bite going Friday. We did find one out of the way spot holding really decent fish but it was totally dependent on the strong south wind and the weatherman was saying that the wind was going to change directions Friday night. Tournament morning rolls around and we had little wind and what we had was from the west. I knew I was in trouble but I tried to kid myself that maybe the fish would stick around in my spot for the morning even without wind. Such was not the case and after 2 passes and 2 little walleye I knew I had to move. I saw an area that had produced fish the day before but there were a half dozen boats pulling cranks through it. I decided to drag crawlers to one side of the area to show the fish something different and had a 20 incher on half way through my drift. I ran slo death rigs back through the area and caught a couple more decent fish. Long story short—-crawlers were our hot bait after 2 days of them being dead. We missed a low 20’s fish at the boat when my net man missed on the swing and we ended up with 11 pounds of fish and 14th place. In true Pool 4 fashion first place had 36 pounds and second place had 16 pounds. The fish are always biting on Pool 4 it is just a matter of finding them and giving them what they want. I guess the basics of this report is that the walleye are starting to turn on but the bite can change from day to day. The unstable weather is not helping anything. We had our rain gear on six different times Friday and between rains it got hot. I want to give a big thank you to Steve and Kari at Everts. Even though they were in the middle of a remodeling project the serve at the resort was second to none. I think if we ever get some stable weather the walleye bite is really going to go— the fish are there and ready to bite if the temperature stops yo-yoing.
