Copper line?

Hey guys…I happened to be reading a recent Outdoor Life magazine and there was a short article about the use of copper line. The article claimed it was “better” than lead core etc. I haven’t used lead core much, and I’ve never even heard of copper line. Anyone ever used copper line around here? In the river?

Never used it in the river but I did order some up for my annual Salmon Trip out to Lake Michigan.

I’ve often wondered the same thing as you so i’m interested to hear from those that may have tried this.

Copper line is common amoun trollers on Lake Michigan. It sinks much deeper than lead core.

I have not seen any walleye fisherman use copper line on inland lakes and rivers to this point. That’s not to say no one is doing it.

We use copper on lake michigan when fishing deep usually. Same concept as leadcore (weighted line to take lures down to depths they normally wouldnt achieve). Unlike leadcore, copper does not have a “sheath” of dacron around it. Therefore, different knots are used to attach it. Reasons for using it are that it achieves greater depth per foot than traditional leadcore and it has a different “fall” rate which gives lure a different look than they would with leadcore. IMO tho, copper is a PITA because of its diameter and memory. If you let it out too quickly, you can create some amazing birdnests. With the release of the new 832 leadcore, I find very little use for copper anymore because Im achieving close to the same depths with the 832. And the 832 is much more user friendly. That being said, Im going to keep my copper setups as there are some days, that for whatever reason, copper is hard to beat. Not sure how practical or helpful it would be on smaller lakes or rivers, but I guess you never know until you try……

Interesting! Thanks for the info. It intrigues me…but not enough to try it…yet. I think one of you guys who are lead core masters should try some on the river and give us a full report.

Just read that magazine too!!! Stating it fished deeper than lead opened my eyes.
