Hot Eye bite on Pool 2

Was out on pool 2 bass fishing on 5/11 (sat) and was catching the usual cornucopia of river fish: brownies, greenies, silver bass (as grandpas call them), drum, toothy critters, white and black crappies of above average proportions, and then on a current seam on the bank I got a nice eye, 25″ about. It was close to the end of our day, but I whaled on them and landed 5 plus missed three others all in very short order. All the fish I landed were over 20″ and it killed me to have to leave, but sometimes you just have to go. We definitely left the fish biting. I’m guessing there were many many many fish in that spot. To put it in hick speak, “get ya a gold trap and go ta’ catchin’ em.”

Excellent! I got into a smallmouth yesterday. Not very big, but It was so dark it was almost black. Nice day on the river despite the wind.

Despite the wind, I went out yesterday afternoon/evening for a few hours. The fish weren’t hopping, but I did manage a few. The the inside corners of wing dams and random rock humps off the main channel were holding fish. The wind made it a simple trolling adventure, and jointed Raps in Red Craw were the ticket. After a brutal spring on P2, it is nice getting back into some fish. Water temp was 56, and the water clarity is great.

Good to hear your finding some fish Drew. How is the flow looking? Is if finally going to be low enough to pitch at wing dams?

    Thanks,

I would say the flow is low enough to pitch the dams it just matter which one and where you want to fish it. We didnt fish any dams last weekend but plan on hitting a few later this week. Will most likely be looking closer to shore on them and where current seams are hitting them. That and the dams nearest the back waters.

As Mike suggested, the inner quarter of dams towards the front of the stack are pitchable. As you move down a stack of dams, you can progressively work your way out. The flow is low enough that a lot of the small seams/eddies that were there a week ago are gone. There are still some off off of larger structures, but the numerous secondary seams are no longer.

That is music to my ears. I have been over at the St.Croix trying to gather a meal or two before working the eyes of the sippi. Although the dinks that seem to always to find my jig or crank on the St.Croix has left me hungry and losing weight. I am happy to hear that the flow is down, temps are up and just maybe, the fish are moving towards more predictable patterns.

Thanks for the input Mike. I have been sticking strictly to backwater channels for the last 3 weeks and putting a bunch of nice fish in the boat but I really want to get on a nice wingdam bite this weekend. Hopefully we can find em out there.

Were the crappies shallow? I try to make a point of CPR’ing crappies on P2 at least once each spring.

Is the dock in at the 494 landing?

I don’t know, but the sandy shoreline on the south side of the ramp works great for beaching boats! I actually prefer beaching to the dock. No rubber bumpers = extra effort to get my bumpers out. Plus, leaving the boat at the dock can get in the way as others come and go.
