So…what is “NORMAL” pool?

I’ve been asked several times over the last couple weeks…

“How high is the water over normal?”

I scratch my head and without TRYING to be a smartass ask the question…what is NORMAL? No one can seem to answer that question. I’ve scoured the NOAA site for NORMAL and AVERAGE but come up with nothing.

I can say as of today, Pool 4 is about 5 feet higher then it was in Jan/Feb.

It’s about 4 feet lower then it was in June of last year.

    It’s in it’s banks.

NORMAL has to change at different times of the year, I would think.

But I can’t say if it’s running higher or lower then NORMAL.

Any of you river rats got the NORMAL answer?

I usually judge “normal” on the sipp according to time of year. This spring is far from normal in my opinion but that is the best part about fishing…. Everything changes and those who change with it are rewarded!

Here’s a “normal answer” from a normal bell shaped curve…Just tell them it is 2 standard deviations higher than normal if it is high but still in its banks when they call. If the river is over the banks, just tell them it is 3 standard deviations higher than normal.

This should be a NORMAL answer from a simple question like “how high is it compared to normal”.

    Perfect! KWP!

I think I’ll use that for the question…”how are the fish biting?” too.

Compared to what? has been my standard answer.

Compared to staying at home? Pretty damn good!

Compared to the rest of MN/WI where the inland waters are closed? Dang good.

Compared to river standards? Might have to work for them you spoiled bratt!

I think we’ll have to post that bell curve near the phone.

At 4 PM today, based on the River Gauges (http://www.mvp-wc.usace.army.mil/projects/duration/ld4.2) duration data the #4 Pool @ 667.18 ft Elev is high and only exceeds this level in May about 7 % of the time. The Project Pool (I think this is their current target) level is 667 ft so I assume they will be opening gates to lower the level back to 667 if conditions downstream allow.
