Bottom bouncing rod question/st. croix rod

Guys. I finally was able to budget for and buy one of the St. Croix eyecon walleye rods. I intend to primarily use it on Pool 4 for bottom bouncing applications. It’s the 7 foot medium action rod (ECT70MM). I normally have been using medium heavy rods for bottom bouncing, but this one came highly recommended. In trying it out a bit last weekend it definitely felt plenty sensitive, but made me a bit nervous that it didn’t have enough “backbone” for hook sets etc. I was unable (sadly) to really test it out given no big eyes on my line. Just wondering if anyone else uses this rod and your experience etc. with it for bottom bouncing – with, say, 1 oz. bottom bouncer etc. Thanks guys.

this rod will work great. most bottom bouncing requires very little “setting the hook”. more of a sweep forward once fish takes the crawler/bait in.

I have 7′ GLoomis Med-Heavy I think is right. But St.Criox can be a little stiffer. Good luck

I own the rod and love it for 3 way or trolling bouncers and I thought the same thing at first…but this is what the rod was made for and St Croix knows how to make em!

Great to hear guys. I love the feel of the rod, was just maybe too used to the medium heavy action/feel of my previous rods so was looking for some assurance etc. Can’t wait to really test it out on an eye.

Using high quality hooks you should not have any trouble setting the hook, even on a giant. Using dull hooks, you could have some trouble.

That rod sounds perfect for bouncers up to say 1.5oz or so. I wouldnt use a 2 ouncer on it, simply because I like more backbone for heavy weights.

I walked around Mill’s Fleet Farm a few weeks ago with an Eyecon in the cart. Ended up not buying it, not because I didn’t want to. This is my deal in the last 90 days, I got a 04′ pro V , a new Humminbird, 3 new Pfluefers,A couple lower end Fenwicks for rigging, and various tackle. The wife(who is FANTASTIC and loves to fish) had a little talk about money going out and we need to dial it back a little. After the the talk she went out to get the mail and I watched her come back to the house with a box in her hand, It was an order I placed at Custem Jigs n Spins! It was pretty damn funny. So I,m going and getting the Eyecon and then thats it!! By the way, its been years since I’ve really updated anything. Thought you guys might get a kick out of this.

If your username implies that you fish Belle Taine by Nevis, then you definitely need to get a nice bottom bouncer setup. I used to fish there quite a bit and spinners were always the best bet during the summer.

    Yes, we have a cabin
on the channel between Shallow and Belle Taine. Finally got a GPS and chip which I’m anxious to use. We’ve enjoyed success on smallies and occasional Walleyes with quite frankly limited boat precision (pontoon)Looking to ratchett it up this year! Any tips/spots would be great if you have time to PM. Thanks!
