My dad and I went out to pool 4 yesterday in the wind and rain to battle with walleyes. This big girl lost the battle but was soon released after a few quick pictures. Overall it was a long day but very worth it. I caught this piggie crawler rig with a floating jighead. She weighed 8 lbs 1 oz by our digital scale. Soon after she was released my dad got a 4 lb 15 oz walleye to end our day on the water.

Nice looking fish!!
Is all that stuff in the back round floating down the river or are you just in the stumps? Not that im trying to figure out where you are but do I dare put my boat back in the water any time soon..
May 30, 2004 at 11:20 pm #306763Welcome to the site. Very nice fish you caught there. Feel free to post anytime. Thanks, Bill
ps. When is Redneck Sr. going to get one that big? Couldn’t resist picking on you Bud. Your son sure knows how to make Dad proud! Don’t you just love it when its your kid thats catching fish?!!! Cherrish those moments. They grow up too fast and then its hard to get out fishing together as he will have a job and a relationship with a gal and time on the water gets to be harder to come by together. Somedays I wish Nate was only 10 years old again-2-3 days a week of time on the water together back then. Sure miss those days.
May 31, 2004 at 3:14 am #306787Just to answer B_Sanders question we were just sitting in the timber to get out of the wind. There are a few deadheads in the water though so be on the lookout. Mr. Cadwell, last December my dad caught a 10 pounder and I’m working my way up to it.
May 31, 2004 at 3:55 am #306790You are off to a great start at catching up to him. Go get em!
Thanks, Billps. no Mr., just plain o’l Bill
May 31, 2004 at 4:51 am #306792You da man! I’m not worthy… So, if you got the 8#, and dad got the 4#, does this mean that on the next trip, if dad wants a 8#, you have to catch a #16?
Congrats!

Congratulations that is an excellent fish. Keep pushing you have a lot of good fishing yet this summer to get bit by a ten pounder. Good Luck
June 3, 2004 at 10:11 pm #307345Hey Redneck Jr.,
That is one nice fish… I want to thank you for sharing it with all of us. I noticed that this looks to be very heavy for it’s length. About half of the fish I’ve had lately, the bigger stuff, has been a little on the scrawny side. Not sure why.
Oh yeah, I think I have a pretty good idea where you caught it from the background!
That 10 lb’er is just out there waiting for you.
June 3, 2004 at 10:59 pm #307351Thanks for the congrats guys.
That fish was pretty heavy for her size she measured out at 27″. My dad and I are going out on Fiday and Saturday. By the way H2O how much has the water came up? I wonder if the spot will still be there and productive on those 2 days.June 3, 2004 at 11:16 pm #307353Assuming I know where you’re at… it’s an excellent high water spot. The higher the better. Just keep sliding up into the shallower water and you should find the fish.
The water levels are posted on the main mississippi river page. Below the listing of the forums: Water Levels @ Bottom of the Page
We’re up about a foot over the last 2 days!
June 4, 2004 at 12:51 am #307365yep…..even I can figure out that secret spot ……..I think we all could use a lesson or two from “James’s big fish photo background cropping classes” …….
A good example of quality background managment…….
And an example of some what poor background managament……(sorry steve, but I figured out your secret trout fishing hole )
June 4, 2004 at 12:53 pm #307413What a great fish!!! I was about your age when I caught my first eight pounder, down on pool 13. We didn’t have livewells, electric trolling motors or any clue about catch and release back in the 60’s, so I was towing this big dog behind the boat on a stringer, fishing above a wingdam. Came time to try another spot, my buddy hauled in the stringer…and we found the eight pounder had been cut in half by the outboard’s prop!
Congrats on a TRULY NICE WALLEYE! As long as your bait is in the water you ARE A WEAPON ! That 10 is just a matter of when not if …then there will be 11’s, 12’s…maybe bigger. Way to to !!!June 4, 2004 at 7:47 pm #307460Well RedneckJr didn’t get that 10 lber today, but he got a twin to the other one he posted above. He had me take a picture of this beauty this morning. Great fish RedneckJr. Good Luck this Weekend.
June 4, 2004 at 10:47 pm #307472Thanks for putting that pic up for me Steve. We ended up finding a battery for our scale today, it said that she weighed 8 lbs. 9 oz. I caught her on my own hand tied blue hair jig with a black 1/4 oz. head. So a special thanks goes to this website and to the teachers; Gundy, Reef Runner, and James for the jig tying seminar last November. I think two eight pounders in a week is pretty good for a fourteen year old.
June 7, 2004 at 2:02 am #307608Wow, nice job on the picture Steve. That is truly a great shot of the boy AND the fish. I guess you have had a little more experience at it than I have. Chris did not get another 8 on Saturday but he did get a 5-2, our only keeper of the tournement. The boy is turning into quite a stick—it must be tha St. Croix rod he got for his birthday. The 5-2 came on one of his hair jigs so he must be doing something right there too. Who ever heard of red and orange hair on a black head. He has 2 jig boxes now full of about every color combo known to man. I can’t lose them as fast as he makes them but it is fun to try and it keeps him out of trouble.
June 8, 2004 at 9:13 pm #307938Way to go kid!!! them are a couple of dandy fish you have picked up. Sure gives you a real sense of accomplishment doesn’t it!! Keep up the very good work!! Sounds like you have found plenty of supplies to tie those fish catchers.
