I feel a little funny even posting this. I was fishing for Bass. Anyway the walleye kept jumping on firetiger, deep diving squarebills. Even with the muddy water they had no trouble catching up to a steady to fast retrieve. They were on the low curent sections of closing dams, and on points in low or no current bays. 17 inch was the top end, a long way fron 26.5 incher at Devil’s Lake Thursday,(all I did was eventually net it). I can’t really take any credit for picking up on this pattern… I actually saw it happen to someone else fishing for Bass the other day. Like I said we were looking for Bass this time , too.

    LE,

We had the same thing happen to us today–caught walleyes when we were expecting bass and northern. We were at Goose Island and were just north of the bridge trying to catch walleyes. We caught one ‘eye using a Matzuo swimming jig, but the current was too strong to get anything close to the bottom, so we went south of the bridge about a quarter mile to try to catch some bass and northern. We started throwing spinner baits into the slack shallow bays and caught a bass and northern but then caught a walleye. I remember the fishing report in the Tribune said that walleyes were being taken in flooded timber, so we headed shallower and kept pitching the spinner baits into 3 feet and shallower water. We caught several more walleyes and lost a few more close to the boat. I’m new to the area but was amazed that we were catching walleyes in shallow water with spinner baits. We also nailed some decent bass and northern, so it was a very fun day. We ended things this evening with some fresh fried walleyes, hash browns, and cervezas. If the Lakers lose, it will be a nearly perfect end to the weekend.
