Water level predictions and clarity

I’m looking for a little advice from my fellow walleye fishing brothers. I’m planning on making the trip up this weekend and would like a little heads up. What are your predictions as far as water level and clarity by Friday the 5th? I hear talk of water flow doubling in the past 24 hours. Does that mean it will be unfishable near the dam and shortly down stream by this weekend? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

I might have made that comment.

With the flow as low as it’s been over the winter (about 6000 cfc) doubling it would bring it up to 12,000 cfs. This would be like doubling a servers tip from 60 cents to $1.20. Doesn’t really amount to much.

Flow may change the fishing spots some what but it’s level that will tell a person if they need to stay home.

As in the ramps are closed…

    See ya this weekend.

X2 on knowing the level! The water will be dirtier because of the run off, but that doesn’t make it un-fishable. brighter colors or louder rattles!

The higher the flow, the more concentrated the fish. When the flow is really up, you can park on a current seam for the entire day, never need to move, and catch fish on 75% of your casts. You do need to pay more attention to debris though.

For the potential this year had a few weeks ago to dump a huge mess int he river it seems to me that you couldn’t ask for better conditions than right now. The quick rain last weekend and temps now bouncing back and forth from above freezing during the day to below freezing at night are fantastic. Now if after that rain it would of stayed warm we could of had a big mess going. The increase in flow we are seeing right now is what is needed to get those fish moving and pushed into more predictable spots.

Its not as bad as it sounds. With the coold down the last couple days, we are seeing most of the small rivers and streams that feed the big dog shrinking back to normal levels and flows. And to begin with, the big river was actually low and in need of an infusion to bring it back to “normal”.

There is some debris coming down with ice chunks. The water has colored up pretty much but not to the point of it being like a thick malted milk. The water temps have shrunk too. These are not reasons to cancel the trip. The extra current right now in addition to the color andwater temps are all positives at this point. Come on up and catch fish.

I couldn’t have asked for advice in a better place. I really appreciate your input guys. Thank you very much. When it comes to a planned 3 hour trip one way, I really want to make sure chances are decent. Thanks again guys and I hope to see you on the water this weekend!
