Coming down to pool 4 this weekend and I am wondering if it is something that I will be able to handle without having any river fishing experience. I normally fish lakes only but my itch for walleyes is getting out of control. I can’t imagine it’s going to be impossible to figure out. Just need to know if it’s worth making the trip? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

So far you got the 1st part right. That is that you are going fishing. Stop into Everts and let them know you are new down there. They will point you in the right direction. Have them point out the few wingdams so you are not smacking them and you should be good to go. Its hard not to have a good time learning a new body of water.

Be careful what you say, the river is very good at making an out of experienced lake fisherman! As most people will tell you, the keys are:
1.) Not running wide open until you are familiar with the river…wing dams hurt
2.) Stop into everts for the latest bite info
3.) Expect to be humbled the first few times (at least that was my experince)

You will have a fun time, it is great place to wet a line.

Would guess if you are heading there this weekend depending on the weather you will have plenty of company on the water to.

She humbles many experienced river fisherman and river tournament fisherman every year at times as well… She is her own beast and changes daily. When you hit it right, luck or skill she is unbelieavable. Takes time enjoy the curve!

Is there quite a bit of current at the access at Everts? Trick to land the boat?

As long as you come to your trailer from downstream…as cold as it is the current shouldn’t be too strong

Just follow the boats then wait for someone to land a fish. Then casually move over there and start fishing. Seems to be what everyone else does…

I have fished the river for 30+ years. Right now the fish are there it just depends on if they are biting or if you can get them to bite. I went last week and killed them, then went saturday and got my A$$ handed to me. All I know is that if something is not working switch. Also look for nets and people catching fish. If you don’t see that then you may be in trouble. If you see it then try to mimic it. Just remember to be respectfull of other people. There usually is a lot of traffic.

The reports were that Sat/Sun was very tough by Pool 4 standards.

Today, with a wind strong enough to make the camper rock the group of three did very well.

Maybe it was from less boat traffic?
