If you’re trying to get around and there’s a lot of boats out, either idle slow so you don’t put out much wake, or punch it and just get there. Nothing more aggravating than an idiot with the boat plowing at slow speeds making the biggest wake possible. I.E. the guy in the Triton two weeks ago….

Anyone other than BK unless you want to learn to walleye fish with stink bait.

    Use stink bait…

Kidding – fish shallow – stay away from the dam, the front part is closed passed the second sign between March and April. You will see the signs. I’ve been told they patrol that quite frequently.

Make sure your trolling motor is charged full. Get up to date bite info from Steve and Kari at Everts and you will be fine.

Run your boat slow until you learn the river stretch. No reason to lose a lower unit to get to a spot 5 minutes faster.

Set the hook and hang on

So I am headed down to Red Wing to fish the first week of April. Can’t make the Rainy Trip this year. Could someone explain this piece a bit more? I don’t plan on getting real close to the dam but want to make sure I don’t end up where I am not suppose to be

Game on and I can’t wait to get there!

James or anyone for that matter,

I will be heading there in early April. I noticed you were there in late Feb. Does the current change a lot? I saw you were using 3/32 oz jigs. Being relatively new to dragging – Should we anticipate more current in April and using heavier jigs or is that weight pretty standard for that technique in the spring.
    Thanks

At all times of the year OTHER than March and April you can be within 150 feet of the dam. During March and April you have to be 300 feet below the dam. It helps to protect the spawning fish that are right up tight to the dam.

Come the beggining of april you will see the flow way more than double what it is now. There is very little flow as of right now. You will for sure have to upsize your jig come that time of year. It will probably be more like a 3/16oz up to 5/16oz depending on how deep you are and if you are inside the current break or not. There will be a lot of conditions that change from now til then but if you change accordingly the fish will still bite!!!

Is it marked or pretty obvious where the cut off is?

300 foot line is marked with a sign on both sides of the river. I know the WI side it is a brown sign. The 150 foot line is a white sign. Its pretty clear.

So please brake down the do’s and dont’s of fishing pool 4…with this being a small area to fish and I know it can get packed with boats quick…What should a guy make sure to do in order to prevent him from getting run out of town…Help!

If you see a line of boats all dragging jigs, don’t be afraid to get in-line and do what they do.

Try not to cut someone else off when getting in line. Leave an appropriate distance between your boat and the one in front of you. “Do Not” run your boat on top of their jigs!
Maintain an appropriate distance behind the boat in front of you.

And by all means, pay attention to their tendencies!
If it appears as though all the boats dragging down stream are giving way to the boats dragging upstream, do the same thing.

Put another way, if all the boats dragging upstream are consistently running shallower, along a break line perhaps, and the boats going down stream are consistently giving way to the deep side of the river, follow that pattern.
Then when you drag upstream, you have the right of way to the shallow break line.

Please don’t be the only guy who’s consistently trying to push all the other boats off the break line while going the opposite direction as the precedent that was set by everyone else!

Joel I think you should hand this out to everyone at the landing.. It sure would make things easier if everyone tried to stay on the same program.
