The pflueger President comes with a braid ready spool.Does anyone tie braid directly to the spool or do you still use mono backer? Fishing cold weather i didnt know if it would be a problem. Also Im considering useing a vanish leader.Do i want to use a small swivel or tie direct. Im a 6 lbs mono guy switching to braids so any advice would be appriciated. Thanks. oh by the way im new to the site, and would like to say hello to all you pool 4 guys.Ive been coming down there the last few years and absolutley love it! See ya on the water.

If you can fill the spool, tie the braid directly to the spool. As for the leader, ive always used a swivel. Easier to tie on a new one. However, this year I’m experimenting with tying direct. Run a longer leader that hopefully won’t need replacing as often.

I use one wrap of black electrical tape to prevent slippage. No backing.

Thanks for the info! Im going to try 10lbs Power Pro With a 6lbs Vanish leader. I wonder if a small swivel will have any drag in the current ?

clark77, I have multiple presidents I use for ice fishing and on all of them I’ve tied power pro 20 lbs directly on the spool. When you buy a spool of power pro it comes with some little white things that you can put on the spool to make sure the line stays tight. Never had a problem yet. I always tie a barrel swivel and then use a 6 or 8 pound mono leader. Works great for walleyes.

I tie back to back uni knots but if you would prefer a swivel, check out the tiny ones Spro makes

Most Pflueger reels have rubber strips on the spools to prevent slippage, no backer necessary. I have 4 Pfluegers spooled with braid tied directly to the spool, with no slippage problem. I rarely run a leader on the river, although I have been lately with the clear water, but I tie direct with the uni to uni.

I have had success with the bloodknot. If your leader is too long the swivel or bloodknot can have an impact on casting.

use the alberto knot, it’s the best I’ve found. I used to tie the back to back uni, but once I tried the alberto there was no going back. Once you get it down there is less chance of failure and it goes through the guides MUCH easier.

I use the Albright Special knot to add a leader…it’s a lot easier to tie when the fingers are cold than uni to uni and I’ve never had it fail.

Fishing pool four or any part of the Mississippi I never use a leader with hardline tie direct. Fishing ultra clear water then I would reconsider.

Why would I need a leader on braid when I do fish high visibility mono??????
