Well, the wind slowed down around 8:30 AM so we loaded the boat quickly and made it to Everts for some minnows around 9:15. By then, the wind had changed directions…cold front moving in.
Undeterred, the kids, the dog (Jigs), and I cruised upstream looking for angry saugers. Four poles rigged the same—plain hook and minnow with 1/2 ounce barrel sinker.
No fish on first drift below the Y. Hannah said, “I don’t think we are going to catch any.” She smirked because she knows that Dad digs in when someone says that.
Spot two was in the 18 to 24 everyman’s land near the dam. In about an hour and a half we boated 25 walleyes, saugers, and one very chunky smallie. All the walleyes went back and ranged from 13 inches to 14 3/4–we tried stretching some but no luck (there is a 15 minimum on eyes).
Saugers were from 4 inches to 16 inches. We lost more than we caught AFTER hooking them! And more that short hit. They were not aggressive for us anyway.
We ran out of fruit snacks and had no hot chocolate—poor planning on Dad’s part.
But the day was awesome and the equipment performed well. The kids even let Dad reel in a fish or two.
See you out there!
