Let The Games Begin!

Since this is the fist time my boat has been in the water since last fall I’m declaring my own fishing opener and MAN O MAN let the games begin!

I first stopped into Everts and it was nice to meet, in person, Mr. BK along with River Rander. Trying to feel out the bite I asked if the bite was jigging or draggin?……. and the answer was yes. Ring worms or superdoos?……..yes Chartruse pepper or purple?…….and the answer was again yes by both Steve and BK. So off I was to see for myself and man were they right. Pretty much anything you wanted to do worked as the fish were definitely in a positive mood with some of them absolutely inhaling the bait.

I ended up catching most of my fish dragging 3/8 oz jigheads and ringworms up stream in about 20-25 fow most of the day and sliding all the way up to 10-12 feet in the evening. Colors didn’t seem to matter much but most of mine came on chart/pepper and purple/chart tail. I don’t know if I made a single pass all day without at least one fish and most passes ended with 3-4 fish each time through. There were lots and lots of fish in the 10″-13″ range but I did manage a limit of 15″ fish with one nice 20″ walleye in the mix.

Even though there weren’t any big fish, this is definitely one of my best first trips of the year. If you can fit it in I would definitely suggest getting over to see the crew at everts and get in on the fast action.

Awesome!! Between this and that rainy river episode I’m really starting to get the itch! Wish I wasn’t so far from all the good rivers though.

There were probably about 25 boats on the water.

Good to meet you in person JF! Glad you had a good time out there.

When I left the bait shop, just after 6 there were still 12 boats out. Right now is the perfect time to get out. Results varied from boat to boat, but only one person was skunked that I’m aware of. In his defense, the bite did seem to slow some in the afternoon. In the morning and early afternoon, it really didn’t seem to matter what colors where used.

The eagles ate well from the few that fish the scour hole. The keeper fish were coming from 18 fow or less, much less.

Good seeing you again Russ. BTW, you’re boat has been deemed a “no cat zone”. Kinda sorta just like the schools.

Folks have about 2 weeks left before the in-land walleye season closes. From that time on until opener, the only time you’ll see less then 25 boats out there is from dusk ’till dawn.

I don’t think you’ll ever get people to stay away from the scour hole even though not much good comes from fishing it. Under 18 fow is very true. I only caught one keeper deeper than that. I also had good intentions of getting over to the rocks you mentioned and look for bigger fish but fighting the wind was more work than I wanted yesterday. I guess it’ll have to wait for the next trip. Thanks again.

HAH! I checked WeatherUnderground in the afternoon. It listed the wind at 4 mph. I looked out the window of the bait shop and said, “WOW! 4 mph whitecaps!”

As far as the scour hole goes to are so right. If the DNR’s thought it was a big problem they would close that area.

Weatherunderground is such a great site. Wish I would have discovered it years ago. Their barometric pressure history is invaluable.

How do you get to the history of the barometric pressure on this site? I looked for it a bit and can’t seem to locate it…

The bite was the toughest I have witnessed this winter. We only had 7 over 15, and we fished hard, and many areas. Wind made things pretty tricky for us vertical and dragging. I need ipilot, cable drive is killin me in heavy wind. best jig was a bucknrubber purplebluish colors with inch and a half of the ringworm tail being the rubber. Downsizing helped I think. The eyes that did eat choked on it. Was nice chatting with ya in the shop bk, thanks for the spam, was pretty tasty. Tough day on river, still better than work!

I’m not picking on you P4…but…You are spoiled! LOL!

I was talking to a fella that was ice fishing Pepin on Sat. 1 small eye all day.

I don’t remember how many you had in your boat, but there’s many people that would take 7 legals between 3 or 4 anglers this time of year….I think.

On the other hand, yes for P4 standards you did have a slow day. Should have come back to the bait shop and I could have told you some of my stories.

I know, that probably sounded bad- didn’t mean it to. I had 2 guys with me. I have really been spoiled, I just wanted to get the boys on more fish. Now that I think about it, a few years ago I would have done cartwheels for 7 nice fish. You are right. cya next week

I’ll be there but moving into the new BK Palace and not the bait shop.

If you have the time, swing up and say hi!

PS never tell your friends how good of a fishing spot you’re taking them to. That’s as bad of luck as having a banana in the boat.
