If anyone hears anything and wants some company to fish some afternoon later this week when it warms up I might be game. It would be nice to get down there if we have a shot. But not if its still a dead sea.

As of 1/9/13 it was still a dead sea. Not sure how the weekend went. There is a very small window of opportunity…like 5-10 minutes. However, all we came up with was 4 dinks. Should go soon.

I have never been ice fishing on Pepin but an hoping to get out soon. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the walleye do in the winter? Do they hold tight to shoreline structure, or roam the main basins? Has anyone been out of Maiden Rock, Frontenac, or Maple Springs areas? I am just looking for a general idea of where to start. Any input is much apprecited. Also feel free to send a PM.

I have yet to get out there this year–but normally I go out from Maiden Rock and head towards channel area somewhat–not right in channel but off on basin areas and do good–I always did good in morning and evening –never really caught much trying during the day or after dark either—not sure if this helps at all

On Monday I spoke with a fella from Bay City and he said people were fishing that area. Crappies were common catches is the marina there. He didn’t mention the river per se, so I can’t offer anything there. As we traveled from Lake City to Red Wing we did drive thru old Frontenac and there were 12-14 shacks out and several people on ice.

A buddy was out yesterday little north of frontenac. Caught 3 walleyes and a limit of fat/big perch. Most fish were cought on a bobber and a glow demand.

I went out yesterday and caught the crap out of saugers and perch. Everything on a glow demand.

Got out yesterday just north of Frontenac, got a sauger about 2 minutes into the trip, then the wind picked up. It got very difficult to keep the flip over house from blowing away. We looked out the window towards Maiden Rock and saw a brown permanant on the north side of the flats start sliding. After watching it blow all the way to the tracks south of the town decided to pack up and call the trip early. We were glad to make it off safe. At least we found one on the first ice trip out there!

Got any pictures of these walleye? Or the glow “demand”? Curious as to see what both of these look like.

From every other post I have seen on the Pepin area, it has been a dead sea.

I bet he meant “glow demon.” Its a glow jig from Custom.

Or I’m wrong and he was talking about something else.

I promised McNasty that I would not spill the beans on the “glow demand”, as it is outproducing everything else.

I’m Pretty sure that they all glow lol. Hooked on fishing in Rochester has a bunch of them. Glow white on both sides with a red tip. I have some at home. If I remember I will take a pic of them

I am new to the rochester area and I am thinking about heading up to the lake pepin area this weekend. Can anyone help me out with what the ice thickness is? I don’t have a 4wheeler and therefore will be walking out so where is the best spot to access the river at? From what I see it looks like the maiden rock and Frontenac areas are my best bets for fishing. Thanks!

…With these cold temps all week and no snow on the ice you should be able to drive a vehicle out. ..rrr

Anybody try at night? Kid’s sports are filling my weekends fast and night time after work might be my only option. Any luck shortly or longer after dark?

    Thanks in advance.

Doesn’t seem to happen. I know you can fish all night up by the dam and get fish this time of year but a half hour to 45 min before sunrise/sunset seems to be the earliest on the lake.

Well, if you would have tried a glow demand, you would have caught fish on pepin after dark. A buddy and I limited out on eater walleyes after the sun set out at frontenac. Nothing on our tip ups, everything on a glow demand.
