This was back when I had a2 wheel drive Suburban and was looking to extend my open water season. I got stranded at the bottom of the long uphill at Rivers Edge Resort south of Wis Dells. Luckily I located sand in a barrel up the hill. From then on, even with my new 4×4 Silverado, I carry a supply of salt/sand mixture, if not for me, maybe to help someone else. But, what I have learned here is to let the trailer/boat drain before heading up any ramp/incline.

How about putting up a sign by the ramp reminding to drain the trailer/boat before pulling ahead. It could be placed by the ramp so when you get in your vehicle it is in plain sight. One time this year I forgot to drain my trailer after launching my boat, a sign might have helped me to not forget. As soon as my boat is off the trailed my mind is already thinking ahead to what spot and bait I’m going to start fishing with, so I just forgot.

“To help us keep the ramp ice free, please drain your trailer/boat before pulling up the ramp”

    This.

A 2×4 in a bucket of cement with a sign attached to it would be perfect!

The people who don’t drain their trailers either don’t know, don’t understand, or forget. A sign would help all 3 of these folks get into the habit of draining the trailer when its cold!

No more complaining until there’s a sign up then

My bets are that no one will ever put a sign up, but still [censored] and moan when guys forget

    Ok, you drew me in.

I haven’t seen anyone B&M as you say. I’ve seen friendly reminders after all, the ramp has to be sanded each day anyway. The only thing draining prior to leaving does is makes it easier for the next person in line.

Deano did have a sign up at one time. Someone drove over it. Hence no sign since.

I ‘spose there could be a sign with a cement foundation, but I think we would all rather not have that damage when we forget that’s there.

It’s all part of the winter gig. Couple years ago I had a sign on the exit door to the bait shop to help me remind folks to drain before leaving.

That worked about as good as the sign that says PUSH on the door.

I took a guy from work out with me a few weeks back, he doesnt own a boat or know how to operate one. I backed in, jumped in the boat and asked him to park the truck. I mentioned to him to “drain the trailer” before he parks. Well I get the boat off and he pulls 3/4s of the way up the ramp and stops .. When he gets to the dock I ask him “why did you pull so far up the ramp to drain it”.. His reply was “its the steepest part of the ramp, if you want the water totally off your trailer, it should drain off better where its steep, right?” He felt like an a ss when I explained it to him, he just thought I didnt want the trailer to freeze up. It was my fault for overlooking his “greenness”. I bring this up because I really dont think guys are intentionally NOT draining their trailers. Would a sign have helped my buddy? No .. Is he educated on “draining trailers” now? Yes ..

Yea, but at least when I try pulling on that stupid backwards door you can say “HEY BUDDY, CAN’T YOU SEE THE SIGN?”.

That door has kicked me in the for 10 years. Anyone have the history on why that door was put in backwards?

Problem with ramp is you usually have the rookie go park the vehicle and you could tell them a thousand times to drain the trailer but unless you clearly explain how and why they aren’t going to understand because they just haven’t been there or done that. I agree, I have never met a fisherman on the river that would intentionally ice the landing. That’s not how rats roll. My father in law felt like a putz a few weeks ago when we finally took the time to tell him that we weren’t worried about the trailer or wheels, we were worried about screwing the next guy. Our fault. We told him to drain the trailer at the edge of the water. He was a lil off.

I’ll have to check with Steve Vick.

All I know for sure is that was a garage door there at one time.

Door swings that way so when the river rises the water pressure pushes it shut and seals it tight.
