Cold weather line

Whats a good line to use for cold weather walleye jigging? Starting to get pretty cold down here now and the rod I’ve been using has 8lb orig blue stren on it (so myself and others can see it, getting tired of people casting over my line). The old stren gets real stiff when its cold and its hard to get good distance on the cast.

Was thinking of trying some colored ice line, or some trilene cold weather line. What do you guys use?

Suffix hi-vis and Berkley sensation hi-vis. 8 lb test and also use the ardent line butter conditioner

I’m an old fan of Triliene Xl, fished all winter below the tube at Coralville and its always worked for casting to the breakline. I use an 1/8th or 5/32nds. ounce jig on 4 pound and set the drag accordingly, can cast a long ways and feel very suttle bites.

Two years ago tried many different lines in below freezing weather to see which would work best for me.

Cortland line ( yellow ) from Dean and Sensation ( orange ) came out on top, both in 8#. This was pitching 1/16 – 1/4 jigs.

The more you fish these lines the better they get as far as casting and the biggest thing is a full spool.

You guys ever have a problem with the colored line scaring fish in clear water below the dams?

    Not a problem B.

In fact (off subject sort of) I use 80 pound Team Catfish Tug O War Nuclear Yellow for all my serious finesse walleye fishing.

‘course this is not cold water.

I’ve had zero problem with it even in clear winter water and have tried 100% fluro leader that I didn’t notice any difference with. I like the 8# mono cause I think the jig floats in the current better for a more natural presentation. I will say the Sensation (line seems to sink slow) makes the jig fish heavier to me then the Cortland and the Cortland blends a little better with the water if visibility is a concern. Sensation does cast a little better, try different ones out see which ones you like for your style. Hope that helps.

Cortland endurance in orange. I use 8 lb. Had very good luck with it since Dean turned me on to it a few years ago.

I think I’ll give the cortland a try. I wanted to try it this spring but the walleye bite was marginal at best for me and I never got around to it. Pulling them in left and right now so I guess its a good time to try it!

Dean’s the best spot to buy it?
