Remember when you where young (with more kahunas then smarts) and walked from Everts up to they Y on ice?

What were the conditions that year?

Low flow? Low stage? Bitterly cold? Which year was it?

Man! Not sure I can remember the year but the flow was non-existent and the nuke plant was down for maintenance so there was no warm water outflow upstream to keep the channel open. It was quite the sight to see. I have that photo around here somewhere.

Funny you say something like that. I remember guys down here[Illinois] in early 70’s walking on the ice around the bull-nose on the dam to go walleye fishing with sonar/blades. At times they would slide 2x6x8 boards on the ice to have support to fish. “CRAZY” They would drill holes and go to it. At that time is seem that we got colder weather for it too! I have not seen anybody do it for many years. Rules and to much open water I guess or they all die off.LOL

Back in the 60’s when we had colder winter weather I’d walk the ice at Bass Camp right up to where the open water was in front of the rollers and drop a sonar down with a long rod.

The ice was actually quite thick right there with the thinner stuff well down stream. It wasn’t uncommon to have a half dozen guys lined up along the edge jigging. I’ve sort of shied away from this. I was a bit lighter then and a whole lot less chicken schnit.

In the late 80’s and early 90’s we used to get enough ice at Dresbach that people would park trucks by the tip of the short wall “bull nose”. We used to have 3′ of ice up there pretty much every year. Last year there was about 4 inches.

Thats down right crazy to think that was possible at a point in time! I’d rather do it by boat myself.

Mrs Evert was saying they drove their pickup truck across the river right in front of the resort prior to the power plant.

When I was a wee lad, we used to fish below the bull nose on Pool 12 in Dubuque through the ice. It was probably back in 1999-2000 when I last did it.

I purchased a small flat bottom for that exact situation. Not as brave? as used to be. Just push the boat out over the ice and fish, either drill holes or push off into the open water.

Back in the 70’s I use to walk 5 miles uphill both ways to school in 3 feet of snow. Just saying.

As Joe the Mayor would say: More proof of global warming.
