Got some time off to spend the evening out on the river with a good friend of mine Cole Johnson. We hit the water right at 6PM out of Everts Resort with the plan of pitching jigs and plastics to shallow water structure. This presentation did not disappoint putting a good number of eater fish in the boat within the first hour of fishing. After that the wind kicked up quite a bit which made it difficult for us to present our baits the way we wanted, we tried switching over to slightly heavier jigs but still noticed a decrease in the number of bites we were getting so we decided to switch back to 1/16 and 3/32 oz jigs and give the dragging bite a try for the first time since last winter. This ended up being a dynamite decision, resulting in multiple fish being landed within the next few hours (7:30-10PM). We didn’t notice the bite get any better as the night went on as the numbers of hits we were getting stayed fairly consistent, what we did notice is the size of fish increase the later it got. We didn’t end up with any monsters by any means but earlier in the evening our average fish was 15-16.5″ I would guess, and by the end we were consistently catching fish in the 18-20″ range with the biggest taping out at 21″. Below is a picture of Cole with his 21″er and another picture of a few of the smaller fish we decided to keep for a fish fry, the third picture is me holding up a few of our eaters.
