Ponder-ing on Pool 2

We decided to head out last night and release our frustration after watching Ponders performance result in another loss with the Vikings. The game was forgotten about after a bit of time on the sippi.

We had a great night last night with good numbers of fish landed and a lot of misses as the action at times was every third cast in spots. Although the big girls seem to be out-smarting us or readjusting to the colder water temps still, we did manage to get a 26.25″ landed. Most fish were in the 20-21″ ranger with even a few in low to mid teen inch range. I must mention…we were also out until about 2am.

MikeW, I read your report from Pool 2 last night, it was the complete opposite for us. I noticed a lot of fish relating to structure including WDs, but they were in the 9-14 fow…the pitching of 1/16 or 1/8 oz jigs wouldn’t work well because of the depth and the little bit of higher current. We tried dragging, but could get a single one. We went back to “pitching” for them with heavier jigs that were not too heavy as we would not hit bottom. I think we were still about 2 feet off the bottom, but those fish that were deeper would come up from the bottom and smack ’em.

I had my head lamp turned to red once and one big gal, estimates at 27″+ or more had followed and trailed my plastic from out of 14 fow up to the boat and followed it along the surface for a bit like a muskie. Sure was neat to see. I still cannot believe the size of her, how far art the eyes were spread apart and how they glowed red from my headlamp. It surely would have been my new PB…and was the highlight of the night!

Wish I could of gotten out last night. Those temps where cary this morning. Looks like maybe one or two more trips in this week before the temps take a big turn.

Way to go on figuring those fish out. The way water temps have dropped this last week and water clarity has picked up its not a big surprise the fish have made some adjustments to where they have been feeding. Still not sure where the extra flow came from over the weekend but had noticed that on Sunday night to.

The Corp is letting water out of the upper reservoirs to keep the 9 foot channel down stream.

At least that’s what the notice said last week.

Well, that’s just great. Just when I finally started figuring things out, the water temps drop, the bigger fish are becoming scarce on the WDs and the water temps drop, and now the flow picks up to change things a bit…heck, might as well throw in a cold front….oh wait, one comes tomorrow!

Thought they started letting the water threw about the beginning of deer hunting season.

Have you guys noticed the schools of fish showing up around the tips and below the wingdams yet? Noticed a big school below the dam above the bridge. Good time of year to get the camera out and check them out. Many are schools of rough fish but sometimes the walleyes will mix in with them. Its unbelievable how thick some of these schools can be. The camera will bounce of fish like crazy.

Like my father always said…”if it was easy, everbody would be out there fishing”. Just like Mille Lacs…anybody can go up there and catch 24-27″ skinny walleyes, but try and bring home a limit of eaters….there’s the challenge.
I couldn’t agree more..I can’t wait for the next trip tomorrow to search, outwit, outfish and outsmart the eyes the peer from below. The challenge is half the fun that just makes the reward that much sweeter!
