Finally made it out to pool 2 yesterday afternoon after being away for nearly a month! My plan was to check out the crankbait trolling bite, and I did not have to look long or far! Nearly every spot I tried produced at least one fish. I concentrated on shoreline areas with moderate current. Most fish were at the top (upstream side) of outside turns. Once I found an active fish, I’d shorten up the passes to stay on the biters. The best fish of the afternoon came early. This 24 incher hit a #5 firetiger shad rap in the broken body style.

Also picked up the usual mix of sheepies and whites. Most of the eyes ran in the 16-18 inch range. I also spent about an hour working over 2 wing dams without a fish to show for my efforts there. I’m sure the fish are there as has been reported, I just did not toss out the right crank and did not try any plastic or hair. Just not enough time.

On another note, I put the boat in at the St Paul Park landing. My first time using this ramp. Nice double ramp with a dock in a protected harbor. Lots of parking in a paved, well lit lot. Good option to check out in case the 494 ramp closes for construction.

Jon-can you give brief directions to the St Paul Park ramp? Also-is it downriver of the 494 ramp?

Yes, the St Paul Park Ramp is south of the 494 ramp. It’s right next to Willy’s Hidden Harbor about 1.5 – 2 miles downriver of 494.

Take the St Paul Park exit off of highway 61. Can’t miss it, there is a water tower right there with “St Paul Park” painted on it. Follow Summit Ave. into town and take a right at Broadway. (There is a Super America station on that corner). Follow Broadway down the hill, across the RR tracks. Go straight at the 4-way stop. Go another 3 blocks or so and take a left on 1st Street. (Broadway comes to an end there) Go one block and take a right on 7th Ave. Go another 2 blocks on 7th to Levee Park and the landing is there.

—Not to sound negative—Ramp is great. Parking lot is great. Very nice park. Just be sure to not leave those valuables in your vehicle. That ramp has a history of coming back to your vehicle after a great day of fishing and at times things tend to be missing. I did not lock the back of my truck topper and I had a Columbia quad parka gone. Have friends that duck hunt leaving from there with similar experiences. Be safe.

Sadly, I think the same thing can be said about ALL of the ramps on pool 2. I guess that’s life in the city….

    Nice Walleye Jon,
I like to trust people, but a few ruin it for the rest, locking it up is no guarantee, but think it helps keep a few borderline individuals more honest. Keep it locked. Our next meeting is May 25th 7pm, hope to see you. Jack.
