Hi guys, I wanted to get some pointers on pool 2. I am taking my grandson out tomorrow with hopes of him hooking into some/a fish. Any pointers to help in my efforts as he doesn’t have a dad around anymore. So he is stuck with Grandpa…

    thanks guys.

PS we will be out on a Smokercraft…

Hopefully by black gets us back.

Mike W will help you out I’m sure. How old is the grandson and can he pitch?

What part of the river are you going to try. Think it might be a little breezy tomorrow. The upper part around the dam, confluence or hidden falls might offer some protection from the wind.

Vertical jigging a jig and fathead during the day or maybe try hair jig or plastics. That might be your best bet at just catching something. Trolling shad raps on the shorelines might still be going to.

    Good luck.

He is 8, and he is just starting out. I will be showing him what I know, but that is limited…

We will be putting in at Ft Snelling. I will try the confluence, and up towards the lock.

That stretch of river can be slow this time of year. I would focus on any shoreline with rock using crankbaits in 5-10′ of water.

You have a good shot at striped bass at the confluence if the walleye/smallie bite is slow.

It can be pretty good also. vertical jigging the confluence is a good bet for walleyes, saugers and like you said bass. Might even be a crappie or two around some of the deeper wood.

Agree, might be tuff on the upper section. With a kid who just wants to see the pole bend, don’t be afraid to just pull up on shore and toss a hook, sinker and glob of crawler on a plan hook out.

Good call on the glob of worms. It was going to be the first bait presentation. I do hope he catches something.

X2 gob of worms on the river. If he’s just starting out, that is the fastest way to get him hooked. The joy of not knowing what you got on the end of the line is half the fun!

There are also some nice Crappies in the marinas right now..Simple slip bobber with a crappie minnow or smaller plastics work well. Good luck and may your grandson’s pole bend!
