Has any one used the Power-Pro for trolling cranks? I have 2 new Daiwa linecounters in the “27” size that I was considering using either 20/6 or the 30/8 (pound test/dia. of line). I intend to troll cranks on Pepin and Mille Lacs this season with planer boards and am looking for suggestions on how to go. I was also was considering Fireline but was told the Power Pro does not fray as easily.

Also, a spool of Power-Pro comes in 300 yard spools. How much and what size mono. line should I use as a backer? Any other advice you can give?

Here is a link to a post on the Gear forum that discusses some favorite trolling lines.

    Baitcast Line

Trilene 10 LB XT covers a lot of my trolling too.

10lb XT or Stren original. I have tried Power pro, and it is not forgiving enough for this technique.

I have 10/2 power pro on all my rods. To combat the no stretch line, I use the pro glass series rods from St. Croix. I’ve just switched over this year, the past I always used fireline 14/6.

I like the 10 lb XT and Fireline 20/6. The Fireline is really nice if you are fishing an area where there are some snags.
    Thanks, Bill

I used Fireline 20/8 and 14/6 since it came out and switched over to Power Pro late in 2002 after all the positive comments on the boards… I switched back to Fireline late last summer because I feel the Fireline is much stronger after lots of trolling… If I see some fray on the line I just cut off 8-10 feet, retie the snap and it is good to go… and for me it is good to go for alot longer than the Power Pro… Just my personal observation and preference after using both products… I also prefer glass rods to counter the no-stretch issue… I have my line spooled at the tackle dealers – at 10 cents a yard it is just a little over the price for a spool and you have zero waste on the end of the spool – net it is basically the same price and you support the tackle dealers…

Was running 4/20 and 6/30 Whiplash last night. IMHO, it isn’t as tough at PP – moot point, as it isn’t available anymore.

I have all my trolling rods rigged with spider wire stealth, 20lb test 6lb diameter. Use it on my 3-way rods as well. This line works great on the rip rap for me, very abrasion resistant. The soft action of the St. Croix Tidemasters and Wild River Rods prevent the hooks from pulling out due to the no stretch characteristics of this line.
