Sauger Mania!

The kids and I hit the dam area this AM. No takers on jigs or plastics. But we didn’t try all that long. Pitched a plain hook, minnow, and sinker over the edge of deep water, dragged it back shallow, and BANG! My seven year old daughter got the hang of it and pulled in ten fish in eleven casts! We’d drop the rod in the holder and watch the tip start banging.

We used up 5 dozen minnows easily.

Now, these were small fish. They insisted on keeping a few. I complied. But to have my kids with me hammerin’ fish in October….priceless!

Oh, yeah…I forgot! Young fish-slayer-Isaac caught one of the biggest saugers I’ve seen in while…it was a little green though…

It looks to me like the lucky dog is the actual dog. Is he eating minnows while nobody is looking?

You are correct! That is our lab named Jigs–what a name for a river fishing dog. He ate a few minnows for sure. It’s those 8 inch saugers that he really enjoys chewing on.
