My son has a hockey tourney in Red Wing in January, I would like to do some fishing. Not exactly sure on the date, I can nail that down if there is a willing partner to take me out. I have no boat, but I have a plethera of equipment to bring if neccessary. Please let me know if somebody has an open seat, and if the river is open enough to fish in January.

    Thank You

That’s what I call planning ahead!

The river is open all year from the head of the lake to the dam unless we have a long stretch of -0 weather.

Which is what the problem with planning ahead for Jan will be. What will the temps be?

You can always stop into 4 Seasons in Red Wing and burn up a half day, then pop into Evert for the rest of the day…and talk cat fishing with a stinky old guy behind the counter if it’s too cold to fish.

On the other hand if the weather is decent, many many single, boatless people stop into Everts early in the morning and wait for an opportunity to arise. What I mean by that is hang in the bait shop until a single boater stops in and hook up with them. Many many friendships have been made this way over the years.

Brian hit it on the head. Lots of folks willing to take someone out with them. Personally, I’m not a fan of fishing alone and especially in January. Another thing you can do is look up River Dan or Turk, they both guide down there in the winter.
