Pool 2 report

I snuck out of work late this afternoon, loaded up the boat, and was off to pool 2!!! I decided to give it a go despite the wind (why’s it always blowing a gale lately?!!). Worked my way through a bunch of old glory holes and nothing. Water temp was 50-51. Finally I caught a smallmouth on a squarebill, then another one on an Alabama rig. Figured the bass are biting, so I went across the river to hot bass spot and flipped a blk/blue jig n’ pig up to the rocks, and bam! 23″ walleye. It was just getting dark and I decided to stick the lights in and fish for a while. I was out till 10:30 and caught one more eye, at 16″. I figured they might really be snapping with the clouds, wind, and future rain moving in, but I didn’t find that to be the case. On a side note, a barge was floating down the river and put its spotlight right on me(to be expected), but then left it there for a few minutes straight. I think I’m still blind!

I also decided to go after work…You are right about the wind; man was it blowing!

I maganged about a dozen walleyes or so. Nothing real big, maybe 23″ was the biggest. Fishing was still pretty good when I left but I was getting tired of the wind so I left.

I went out friday night and casted cranks the whole time. Only caught 2, but the biggest was the fattest 26″ walleye ive ever seen

The picture isnt the best, but this fish was 26″ long. You can tell how fat it is by looking at how small the head is compared to the rest of the body

Yeah, I was out last Wed and Sun and the wind was pretty tough both days. On Wednesday fish were biting on jigs w/crawlers. I caught the pictured smallie on a wingdam and it was a blast! It’s not a huge fish, but it fought like a crazed maniac.

We couldn’t get anything to bite a crawler for the life of us on Sunday, but we did pick up a few Walleyes on crank baits. The guy I have pictured here is fairly unremarkable except for the fact that he nailed a crank right at the boat, Musky-style! It was pretty wild.

Been on a decent plastics bite over the weekend. Sunday was fantastic for numbers. Yesterday we had to spend some time looking for them. When we do find them they have been smacking the plastics very hard. Not a lot of large fish right now but still plenty over 20″s. Here is a 27″er caught last Friday afternoon on a purple/chartruese Pulse R. She hit right under the boat at the end of a casts. Could just about say I was vertical jigging at that point.

Should add fro you guys looking for a local supply of BfishN plastics and jigs Joes is well stocked up right now. Stopped in yesterday for some last minute stuff. Looks like plenty of Draggin jigs which has become a favorite of mine for pitching those very snaggy wingdams and shorelines. They are also stocked up on Mini Pulse R’s and Moxies.

Dont forget to say Hi to Roger while you are there.

I’ve never fished with any of the BfishN stuff, but if you’re consistently catching 20″+ fish on them it sounds like I need to give it a go. I’m going to head up to Joe’s tomorrow and get myself going on some of those baits. Any recommendations for a BfishN starter kit? Based on the website, it looks like Pulse-R + Precision Jigs might be a good combo?

Dean’s Tackle Box is an excellent place to get the BfishN plastics and jigs also. Free shipping if you’re over $40 I believe and just about $5.00 if you’re not. I ordered some stuff Friday morning and the U.S. Postal service delivered it to my house in the Twin Cities the next day.

If all goes accoring to plan, I shall be out this weekend.

#1-Not banging the lower unit off a wing dam is my first priority.

#2- I just can not for the life of me figure out this plastics bite.

#3- Well; dang-it I just might start Cat Fishing

You just have to set attainable goals so that you don’t get discouraged.

For plastics it only been Moxies or Pulse R’s the last few trips. Im sure the old stand by ringworms, paddle tails and k grubs would all take fish to. Might be worth while to try a little variety on the spots that are holding fish. Some many days all those fish dont want the same bait. Most likely explains why I have a shelf full of plastic in the garage.

I do like the tail action on the moxies and pulse r’s as they where designed with low flow in mind.

For colors White, Purple/chartruese, Firecracker/chartruese, pro blue. All the colors seem to catch fish at one time or another. The ones you get the most confidence in will be the ones you catch the most fish on.

For jig colors try black, orange or some of the tiger barred series. If new to jig pitching make sure and try some draggin jigs. You dont get that nice thunk of the jig hitting the rock like with a H20 jig. They tend to glide over the rocks more and will save you a lot of lost jigs.

1/8th ounce is a good size right now. Some windy days or if we get more flow 3/16 and 1/4 may be better sizes.

If you happen to find the crappies out there might be good to have a pack of the mini pulse rs on hand. Had some crappies trying to tackle the larger ones but most where missing it. That smaller size might just be right for them.

Did someone ask for big sauger pics???

Seems like I get one over 20″ every time out!
Only a couple bigger eyes but I’m seeing them start to show up in better numbers….
Trolling bite has been great as well as pitching cranks and jig/crawler at dams.
Sounds like the plastic bite is heating up

Very nice sauger Jamie. We picked up three pretty kick the other day before going looking for walleyes. Might have to get out mid day to check out that bite some more.

Whats the biggest sauger you have pulled out of there? My biggest over the years was a little over 23″s but maybe only around 20″ this year.

Thanks for all the advice on the BFishN stuff. I went down to Joe’s today and bought a whole assortment of BFishN plastics and jigs. Now at least I can look like I know what I’m doing

Nice job guys! I’ve noticed the bite slowly getting better here over the last week, but certainly not dynamite. I haven’t been able to spend lots of time out there but have been poking a few quality fish, but no numbers of real good fish for my boat yet.

Looks like this weather is pushing that water temp down in the right direction for our plastics bite to really kick in. Most my fish have been coming on Jimmy D Walleye Weenie hair jigs. With water temps in the mid to low 50’s, they’re hard to beat

    Good luck all
