I’m wondering what pool is near Cedar Rapids IA. I’m going to be down there this spring and thought I’d bring my boat and check out the area. Thanks, Zim.

Your best bet would be L&D 10,Guttenberg, IA , good ramp south of downtown main st.(about 1 1/2 hrs from C.R.) Dubuqe,IA,L&D 11, about 1hr on hwy 151. Look at the map and you can also go over to Bellevue, depends on how much time you have. Good luck.

Try 17 that would be the closest, little rough at times.

Lundeyes, A little rough as in waves or things to hit? Any bait shops in that area you’d recomend talking to?

Yo Zim – I don’t know the time frame when you say Spring !

But within 15mi of CR you got some exellent fishing. Best of all you have several choices : You can small river fish the tail waters below Coralville Dam (IA River). Saugeye are being caught now as you’re reading this. You can fish the Coralville Lake (Reservoir) for Bass, Walleye, Cat and Crappie. You can drive 60-100 miles to Mississippi Pools 10-17. A lot of “you cans” but from CR you have several good choices, it depends on when you mean “Spring” and the amount of driving you want to do ! Good Luck !!

    Zim,

Water is rough at times, but can be very good fishing. Kreading had some good points on local water, I fish the lake alot and catch good fish in the fall in the 8lb class. Summer time is tough because of the large party boats. Have to get out there early. Has some excellent crappie fishing also. Don’t forget about lake Mc Bride, water is now 6′ low because of structure addition. This lake has very good walleye and saugeye in it but please practice cpr. Hope this helps and save some for seed. The closest contact with the Miss is Dubuque. I’ve never fished it much, since it’s only about 5 miles further to Guttenburg. Clinton and Davenport will take you at least another 1/2 hour, but can be worth it, especially if you’re catfishing. If you’re coming down in late spring, you might want to go somewhere where you can duck the powerboats and barges.

I spent the better part of my fishing thus far going after crappies and cats in Coralville and MacBride. MacBride has better numbers, but boats with >10hp motors get kicked off just as things are getting interesting (Memorial Day). You can still go out if you trailer the gas motor and use a kicker or an electric, but you’d better hope a stiff wind or a storm doesn’t come in fast. Both lakes are loaded with cats, but my experience is that C’ville turns off when the powerboats come out to play.
