After the a long summer on avoiding the dog days of summer I finally had an opportunity to hit the river again. With not a lot of notice, few posts to rely on for expert advice, we decided to head towards the Red Wing dam. Since that is typically the only place I can ever find fish.

We tried the wing dams with crawlers and plastics and were unsuccessful. We then decided to head over to the new rock walls built. We started about half way down and draging Pulse-R paddle tails we several nice strikes and finally hooked into a monster!

29.5 inches and 8.9 pounds! 3 pounds and 4 inches longer than my previous best!

I do have a question for some of you with experience. I would guess that late fall after they feed heavily and in the spring when they are full of spawn they weigh significantly more.

So my late september walleye what would its max weight have been this year?

FYI I released the fish in the same spot I caught it, so that someone else has the chance for a nice battle!

i dont mean to steal anyones “secrets” but i have never bought any pulse r’s before and i would like to give them a shot. Would anyone like to point me in the right direction as far as colors or size for walleyes or bass?

    Thank you!

Very nice fish! That side tends to have more flow than the wing dam side this time of year. Hence more fish over there. It looks like pretty rough conditions out there!

For river walleyes purple/chartreuse tail, Fire cracker chartreuse tail, Pro Blue or white are good to start with.

Great fish. Wish I would of tried those rocks over the weekend.

This fish came on the green with black fleck. Not sure the actual color name.

And as for depth I tried to keep it on the break at about 15 ft. not to close it was 10-12 ft and nothing. And out further it was 18-20 and nothing there either. Also take into consideration these depths are releveant to the current conditions with extremely low water.

Thank you for all of your great comments!!!!!!!!

It’s part of the Lower Embankment project started a couple years ago and to be finished up in November.

It starts at the “Y” on the WI side, goes up to the clam beds, stops, then more new construction above the sand bar.

If you haven’t been in the area of the dam lately, you have a new view waiting for you next time out.

PS most people call it “new rip rap”.

That is going to be a good spot when we get a little more flow! I did manage Sunday a 24 1/8 in the same area. Congrats on the PB!
