A friend and I are planning a trip in the middle of October for pool 2. We have never fished here. We attempted pool 4 in the spring and got nothing. Would anyone be willing to point us in the right direction of what to look for what to use maybe if you want to PM me that is fine. Thanks for the help.

There are 2 recent post on the current Pool 2 bite. Both have a lot of good info. (See Early Fall Walleyes and Wing Dam Walleyes)

If you are in IGH on Oct 6, stop on down to Lions Levee Park for the Pool 2 CPR contest weigh in. There will be a bunch of pool 2 guys there that might be able to point you in the right direction.

Questions for ya. Are you comfortable fishing the river after dark? Also, what section are you looking at? Upper, middle or lower end?

Probably wouldn’t stay after dark. Since I live in IGH we would probably launch by 494. Most likely stay in that area.

From 494 there are many areas near that access. One area that generally produces mid Oct through the winter months is the airport . (The area of river between the pigs eye treatment plant and the end of the runway) Pitch jig/plastic, hair or cranks to the wing dams there for walleye. Vert jig or drag the main channel for sauger and an occasional walleye.

The wingdams from there back on down to the 494 ramp can all produce at times. Of course low light hours are always best. Stick it out as long as you feel comfortable or be there at sunrise.

Great info from Jon….I personally would hire a guide to show you the in & outs of P2 fishing. This saves a ton of time on the learning curve, we are coming into the best time to fish P2 you will be able to shorten the learning curve with a guide and still hit some of the best fall fishing.

I would contact MikeW here on the site to guide you.

Google “pool 2 telemetry study”. This contains some solid info that should help get you started.

You could even fish the contest next Saturday. It would be a great time to learn about the river and see where and how others fish this time of year.

If you want to talk fishing our pool 2 contest and get together next weekend is a great place to start. If you feel lucky enough the contest is just $15 per person to get in with optional $5 big fish pot. If not there will be a lot of guys out on the pool that day that you could see what they are doing. After the contest we have a get together at Lion Levee park to that would be a great place to meet other pool 2 guys and chat fishing. Lots of great fishing storied got shared there last year. Think most of them where true also.

If you guys are interested in a guide trip I wold be happy to help to. Just give me a call. Pool 2 contest Oct. 6th

Also make sure to keep a eye on the reports as it gets closer to the time you are planning to fish. Would think many of the patterns we are fishing right now will continue until then. The big change as mentioned above should be the early morning and right at dark bite getting stronger. Might want to make sure one of those times are in your fishing schedule.

The easiest and best way to get started fishing pool 2 is to start with the wingdams. If you dont have a map chip, you can spot a lot of them by the ripples at the surface of the water, or fish the buoys. Sounds like you’re familiar with fishing the river further downstream, its really the same thing.

The other good option would be to do some trolling too. Cover some water, and when you find a fish or two, slow down and fish them.

The best (and only way) to learn a body of water is to get out there and fish it, pool 2 isnt any different.
