Pool 2 Report?

Does anyone have any info on the Pool 2 bite lately? I haven’t been out in a couple weeks and don’t really know where to go. My buddies and I ( ) are thinking about giving it a try this weekend. Should we work the dam? the confluence? or fish wingdams near the 494 bridge? Any help would be appreciated. What techniques are working?

By the way, check out this bass I caught on Lake of the Isles a couple weeks ago. I was fishing for sunnies with my girlfriend and this beauty hit a tiny flu flu jig with a piece of a crawler. CPR. GOOD TIMES!!!

Now thats a pig of a bucketmouth! She looks to easily hit the 21″ range! Nice catch, photo and release.

As for the Pool 2 bite, unfortunately I cannot give you any current and up to date info because I have not been down there for a few weeks now. My return is scheduled for this afternoon for my boat. From what I have been hearing the dam area has been pretty inconsistent for a few weeks now. My plan of attack today is to start around the 494 area and work my way south. I am planning to start longline trolling some small cranks in some backwater cuts and go from there. If I get bit on the cranks or make contact, I will slow down and throw some bait in there face.
Inside turns just out of the main current in the main channel are also areas worth exploring right now.
Sometime this afternoon, I will also stop off and take poke at a couple wingdams and see what that does with both cranks and plastics.

Good luck to you and I will have a report or a post up here by the end of the night to give an update on what I find.

Hey Biggiesmalls-that is one heck of a nice bass! Congrats on that! I was on the river on monday morning, got one 23″ eye off the main river casting a perch shad rap near shore. This was on the upper part of the pool. I tried trolling the main river with #5 shad raps in various colors but no luck. This morning I launched from the 494 ramp, tried several different winddams casting the tops, trolling the fronts, and 3 way rigging artificals in deep water with nothing working. Tried various colors-blk/sil, perch, and firetiger but no luck. Sorry not much help but now you have an idea what wasn’t working.Good Fishn to ya!

I got on the water about 3:00pm today and fished until dark. I was able to drum up 2 different patterns that seem to produce fish for me today. The first and most consistent for me was pulling cranks shallow on current swept sand/gravel banks. Best depth was about 7-8 foot mark. Pulled both deeper and shallower, but as I got close to the 7-8 foot depth, the fish were pretty cooperative. Once I found an area where I continued to get bit on each pass, I slowed down and pitched some hair jigs to the area to no avail…they wanted it moving and there was no if’s and’s or but’s about it. Didn’t take me long to put the jig rods away and grab my crankin rod. The Best crank for me was the new smaller Cotton Cordell’s Grappler Shad CD14 in the crawdad color. This was my first time pulling it on the river and was pleasantly surprised at its ability to catch fish and run true right out of the box. These lures are hitting the shelves at all the Gander Mountain stores in the Minneapolis and surrounding area as of today!! The CD14 Grappler Shad is the new smaller kid brother to the Grappler Shad CD15 that has been on the shelves for a little over a year now. I predict this to be my go to river walleye trolling bait in the seasons to come!!

The next pattern I was able to muster a couple fish up tonight was again trolling crankbaits, but on current swept rip rap shorelines. The best depth here was the 7-9 foot of water and trolled at a pretty good clip. I was trolling up river at 1.4mph pretty tight to the shoreline. If I was unable to bump the bottom a bit here in this area, the fish seem to pass on the lure, but the more I made contact with the bottom, the more response I got.
All my attention tonight was around the 494 area and south. From the airport and south, there are a ton of areas where pulling crankbaits shallow can and will be effective.
Water temp tonight was reading 59.1 degrees and water clarity was respectable at about 18-20″ of visibility.

Good luck and I will see you on the water early next week.

For Pool 2 walleye chasers, may want to add wing dams to Steve’s suggestion above. Not sure if DeeZee hit them or not, but I had good success today, not so much in numbers, but good fish size. Caught three dandys from a single wing dam; also caught a few others in the 20″ range – all on crank baits. Only downer was that two of the three big ones absolutely inhaled the crank – had to perform moderate surgery to retrieve the bait. I don’t think the last one will make it. Kinda takes some of the fun out of it.

    Big E,
Glad you had some luck on the wingies with cranks. On Friday, I was looking for some trolling areas for up coming guide trips as back up spot. I stopped at one wingdam for a few minutes on my way down river and it produced one fish around the 19″ range. With lots to do before sundown, I left quickly and continued to run south.

What crank got the nod for you o nthe wingdams?
I will be down several times this week!

Hey DeeZee-when you say current swept areas, are these the areas w/ strong current or just some current off of the main channel?

    Dave,

My first trolling area started out in a backwater cut just off the main channel. There was still some considerable current here. My second trolling area came right in the blunt of the current tight up against the rip rap shoreline in about 6-9 foot of water. I spooled my rod up with some much heavier line and went bulldozing through the rocks and got bit soon after I bumped bottom. My best colors were darker profiles such as the craw pattern.
I ended the evening with 9 fish, nothing big just nice average 16″-20″ fish! I will be back down on Wednesday.

I plan on hitting the upper part on Wednesday. I have been avoiding some of the main channel spots that produce later on, but maybe I will need to try them now.

    Thank you!

DeeZee: All fish came on a Bomber 6A, the old “red tiger” or “fire engine” color scheme (which I don’t think they make anymore). Also noted that the deeper wing dams were definately better – didn’t get anything on wing dams with shallow tops. Again, not great numbers, but two of the fish were 27″ and one was 28″. And to think I spent the first half of the day fishing a lake over in Wisconsin – what was I thinking?

I was on the river this morning and found some nice eyes off the tops of 3 different wing dams-20 to 26″. I started with a #15 Grappler Shad but got bit short, so changed to something a little smaller-a jointed shad rap in perch and got all my fish on that. Also picked up a cat and smallie. It was one of those mornings that was kind of slow but at the end you realize it wasn’t too bad. Good fishn to ya!
