They’re back.
You know they are biting when a bass fisherman can catch them

Alright now… no fair teasing us. Tell us more! Inquiring minds want to know.
Me hide the walleye’s? lol… Troll bite is picking up in pool 7. #7 chartruse 25 ft water. Got out fiday night picked up a dozen descent Fish. caught 1 about 4.5 or so. Fished till 8:30 pm nothing going after dark on my favorite flat All excited went to pool 5 (My favorite) today. Figured I’de just slay them if they were on in tremp. You’d swear there wasn’t a walleye in that pool. Not 1 bump or bite reguardless of technique. Pulled out at 2:00 went back to pool 7. 2 fish on the first pass. Caught the fish right in the middle of the heaviest flow in 25 ft. Basically ran the motor to hold the boat almost still, the current was fast enough to work the bait. Every now and the we pulled it up a couple feet and set it back down. When they hit they’de just hammer the bait. Caught a 12″ sauger with a 5″ shad hanging out of his mouth. Why he still wanted a shad rap is beyond me. Couldn’t finish swallowing the food he had. Think Ive got to get some 2 pound shad bodies if I want to catch a big walleye seing what a little one will poke in his mouth.
hello all….fantastic web site!! ive just moved up here last year and now have a boat, so i should be a regular here as i live right near the croix and plan to fish the croix or miss 2-3 times per week, but i was wondering how i find out about where pool 3 or 4 and so on are on the miss, is there a web site or anything? thanks
Thor,
Glad to have you on the board. As far as pool locations, look at the top of page and click on pool locations. Hope this helps and welcome.
also i thought fishing season was closed for eyes? but i keep reading all this fishing talk? sorry for the lack of knowing but this seems like the place to ask.
The Mississippi River is open all year round. Except, I believe, the head of the river in closed that doesn’t border Wisconsin. That area is considered inland waters.
so i take it its not frozen over…any tip on a first time person wich spot to go to maybe next weekend if the weather permits? where to put in etc?
Go to pool 4 on the Mississippi River to fish. You can put in at Everts Resort [click on the Everts Resort banner at the top when it shows for more info]. For a starter try fishing the first half mile area below the dam. Jig and minnow or pulling 3-ways will get you into fish. If you can, come to the free seminar that James Holst and Chris Tuckner are doing in Rochester at 7:00 this monday night March 18 as they will be talking about the ways to fish for walleyes right now. You will learn alot about fishing the river in one night. Hope this helps and welcome to the area. Bill
thor,
Welcome to the area. If you want to learn how to fish the ‘Croix I would highly recommend hiring a local guide. I’ve fished with Charlie “Turk” Gierke 3 or 4 times and with Chris Tuckner once. I can’t tell you how much you will learn from these guys. You can reach either one of them through the website here. It’s well worth the investment for the knowledge alone and you will catch fish. I purchased my first boat this year and looking forward to using the knowledge I gained from these top notch guides.
I’ve got two buddies coming up in May and we’re going out with Tuck. Can’t wait. May walleyes on the ‘Croix.
Hey Thor
My advice..
I DO NOT GET KICK BACKS from this site so here goes..
If you have never fished the river before hire a guide this time of year the river can be very dangerous.. Now I don’t want to scare you just my two cents worth.. Good luck have fun wear your lifevest!!!
Thor, if you new to the Mississippi I thought I should warn you about Wingdams. They are not marked with cans. When in the main channel stay betweens the Red and Green bouys you will be safe. Any time you are outside of the cans You are in Jeopardy of hitting rock placed to stop or direct current. Best get youself a hotspots map, or a Corps of engineeer navigation map, (or someone to ride with) and scope out the path that you will be boating on. It’s easy enough to navigate the river once you get to know it, but a wingdam could sure ruin your first day on the Miss. Good luck on your first trip out. You will quickly find out that you just moved next to one of the best, and most diverse fisheries in the US. Welcome aboard.
thanks all….ive thought about the guide idea alot , looking at a map and being on the waters can intimidate someone who has never fished there before. WHERE IN THE HECK DO YOU EVEN BEGIN! but i guess thats part of the enjoyment of it all. good equipment, maps, sonar and ALOT of advise/tips/infosharing does help.
The best place to start would be at lock and dam #3 in red wing mn. If you would like more info or directions to the nearest lauch call us at (651)388-7999 or e-mail us at

Hello everyone! I am not new to fishing the river- but it has been awhile, and I was wondering what’s a good place to go with the wife and kids? Any help would be appreciated.
Pool 4 is a good one to go to. You can go to the wisconsin landing if ya got a faster boat. only 5-10 minutes off of everts and saves ya 7 bucks, but if ya want to get good service and a nice guy who will prolly help ya out on where to go go to everts landing
Did you use ChugBugs or Ring worms?? I like to catch Wallys too,, Thinking of going fishing Friday, I have to deliver some saw blades to an areo-space company in arcadia. Is there any good guides that I could hire in that area??
Ringworms and chugbugs sounds like you went walleye fishing with a bass fisherman?
Just for the record I HAVE caught walleye on a topwater bait, and yes it WAS a chugbug, but the water was slightly warmer than it is right now.
Thor,
Pool 2 is open year round for fishing as well, but is a catch and release fishery for walleyes and bass (smallmouth and largemouth). This pool stretches from Lock and Dam #1 (Ford Motor Plant) down to Hastings Lock and Dam #2. This is another option for you to fish in the “dog days of winter”.
This stretch of river is littered with wingdams and can be very hazardous. Like Jedsall mentioned stay within the red and green cans and be sure to look at the army corps navigational maps, these point out almost all the wingdams.
Have Fun
