I was on pool 4 Weds 3/13. I noticed that there were white marble sized white balls on the sides and bottoms of some of the sauger 14″-18″ inchers. What the heck is that from? I didn’t have a camera to take a picture of it so maybe someone else noticed it as well or took a picture.

For what it’s worth I got all my fish over 15″ on 3-ways and floaters w/minnows 19″ sauger being the largest fish of the day for me. I struck out with stickbaits and I got small eyes/sauger on jigs/minnow. Brian

It was probably lymphocystis which is a disfiguring viral disease found in walleyes/saugers. I haven’t heard of fish dying from it, but it sure looks gross.

I’ve caught a few both in Red Wing and at the St. Louis river in Duluth, and they always go right back in the water. The fish don’t seem to mind those growths, but I sure ain’t eatin anything that looks like that. I suppose it’s a harmless growth, but it don’t look good. Bret

Lymphocystis is probably what you are seeing as was posted ahead of me. It usually appears more prominantly this time of year for some reason. I have seen it on a number of fish in Mille Lacs as well. I have been told that during the act of spawning, these fish get dingged up by fins, etc. These wounds offer a entry into the body for this virus. It may explain why it is seen more in the Spring than other times of the year. Any G&F biologists out there?
