What is your favorite crank to throw for walleye?

I’d have to say a #5 flicker shad is my favorite, the hollywood color.

I have to SO agree with the #5 Flicker Shad. But the Viking Purple has been our go to crank all season so far. Please understand that as a true blue Packer Fan, how hard it is to admit that anything Viking actually is good something(Lol)!

On rip rap I like the #7 shad raps with the occasional RS thrown in for good measure.

On wingdams the DT series are hard to beat as are Bomber 5 & 6A’s.

    Live Target –
Lipless Gizzard Shad – 1/2oz is my #1 crank for casting and vertical jigging.

#2 is the Live Target Rainbow Smelt Deep diver in the 3-1/2″ Tends to be inhaled when everything else is just getting those curiosity “nips”

#3 Rapala Rattle Trap in fire tiger.

#4 Rapala Glass Rap in the white

If I’m tossing to 3 fow or less, I’ll blow the dust off of my Jr. Thundersticks

Definitely purple and perch #5 shad rap followed by #7 minnow rap in the same colors for me!

Actually, to break the mold here, I throw a mid-size fat free shad in pearl white. They smoke it in particularly on wingdams and it produces the bigger fish for me.

    #1 – X-Rap Shad
    #2 – Shad Rap RS
    #3 – Flicker Shad

The X-Rap Shad is a phenominal casting bait. I do really well for size on these baits for some reason.

I favor the Shad Rap RS over the regular shad rap just because it seems to be a bit tougher, and I perfer the suspending factor in most situations.

Flicker Shads are great baits, but especially the smaller ones are really tough to keep in tune! Had a great numbers bite going on the #5 flickers last year and I swear I had to re-tune every few fish. God help you if you’re bumping a #5 on the bottom, because you’ll spend more time tuning than fishing. But they’re relatively cheap and they catch fish like crazy in some situations, that’s for sure!

I will second the #6 Xrap shad rap. It suspends perfect and fishes slow and fast as well as any other bait. Best downstream bait out there but a little spendy!! DT’s are also great baits and both have enough weight to cast on a windy day with no issues. #5 flickers are great baits to troll but cannot cover water on the cast like these others

Bombers and Rapala DT’s. Started throwing the DT’s last summer. They have great weight to them and cast well into the wind. 6A Bombers have been a got to bait for a long time. Started throwing more 7A’s a couple of years ago to hit those spots deep on the tips of wingdams.

Flicker shads are good and they are cheap. They dont cast worth a darn into the wind.

Ask me this question a month from now that I’ll probably have the DTs in my top 3 again!

I haven’t fished the X Rap shad on dams yet but I burnt up the debit card pretty good the other day establishing a stock pile of them that will get some game time once the water levels go back down on 2 and 4. Good to hear they’ve been solid for you and others. I loved the way they looked trolled so I figured why not…. you can never have too many cranks, right?!

They might work pretty well when you troll them on shallow, high water current seams, too…

Shad Raps (#5 -#9), Minnow raps, husky jerks and x-raps and spend all my time grinding the bottom so glad to hear no flickers.

I use to beat the snot out of the rocks on the Croix with Wally Divers and catch fish but the bills break too easy so I havent used them in several years.

Model A Bombers #6 or #7 are hard to beat . I do like Bandit’s and Salmo Hornets at times also. Shad raps and Flickers in the Fall on rock.

I’ve been a long time fan on the DT series of cranks on wingdams, though I started really taking a liking to the ‘Crankin Rap’. Cast and retrieve like a DT but rattle like a bomber.
I’m honestly tempted to sell all my bombers. While they catch fish, I get frustrated quickly with how poor some of them run without constant tuning.

Rapala’s are simply turn key – unbox, tie on, cast, reel in fish, repeat

Ive had issues with the #5 Bombers wanting to hit bottom and spin. Its not very often I even throw them anymore. Dont seem to have any issues with #6 size or larger.

Ill have to look into those crankin raps. Those are almost free, right?

The #5’s are definitely far more sensitive than the larger baits. I’ve found it doesn’t even take a bottom strike to cause the bait to kick out and spin. Just heavy current on the end of a wingie will turn them into a whirling dervish of spin once you start the retrieve. Of course in lower flow situations and at a moderate retrieve speed… I’ve caught some darn nice fish on them.

Bombers have always been really good for me, Gander had DT’s on sale in a bargain bind a while back and I bought a ton of them, I haven’t had a chance to use them yet.

Perch X-rap! And you better get an Xtreme net man to go with it!
