Anybody know what is going on at pool 14? Is it at the post spawn level?

The bite on Pool 14 has been terrible this spring. The shad didn’t die off this winter with the mild conditions, so there is bait every where. I have never seen the bite this bad for this long. I just hope the post spawn bite starts soon I’m starting to get depressed.

I agree with Jigfan. The Walleye bite has been bad. But the good news is they should be done spawning and will start to bite again soon. I did pick-up a few small males last friday. If it weren’t for the Bass being so eager to bite, it would not be worth getting the boat wet. Hang in there, things will improve.

Spawn was complete by the 4th or 5th. The males are on the beds still (24-25 inch males too!), but I can’t speak of whether they are biting. I did catch a 13″ brown trout up at the dam last Monday though. That was interesting!

As an aside, we have 10.2 million eggs in the hatchery. 2.5 million will be heading to Rathbun Hatchery later in the week.

Thanks for posting some info on Pool 14. With twin girls under 2, I’ll be keeping the boat home til there’s a better bite! For what it’s worth, we should be getting 1-3 inches of rain over the next week or so, so the flow on the big river should pick up a bit. I’m not sure that’s good, but it is about time!

Wow a brown?!? Any idea if it was a native? I have seen one trout caught below 15 dam quite a few years ago, but it was a rainbow.

I fished pool 13 last weekend , the bite was know better up there. I fished the spawning bed on the bluff, there were still fish on it . They just don’t seem interested in biting. I had 1 male that was foul hooked , it was still milting all over the place. There were about a dozen boats fishing the area and that was the only fish I saw caught. After several hours of very tough eye chasing we decided to try are luck on bass, man am I glad we did. The bass bite was outstanding. We had on of the best bass days I have ever had on the river south of Lansing. Casting cranks to wood with good current was the ticket.

We fished Pool 11 Friday and Saturday. Fished the spawining area hard but caught only sheephead. Caught a 15.5″ and a dink on some sand flats and one 18.5″ in a current break off Ackermanns cut. Fished many areas including several wingdams, really tough finding fish willing to bite. The full moon always screws up the river day bite in my opinion. Still had a great time as always fishing the river!
