Looking at the river conditions this morning I knew there would be a number of spots I wanted to hit in search for some good fish and some good numbers. It seems that the fish are currently spread out all over the place. A person can grind out a limit or two but from what I’m seeing they are going to be picking up a fish here and there instead of finding an area that is concentrating fish.
We started the day dragging hair jigs and plastics over shallow sand. This technique produced the three keeper sauger (15″) for the day and countless White Bass and Sheepshead.
Anybody ever seen a Walleye with spine problems like the Sauger have occasionally?
My dad did have an interesting thing happen today. Somehow he managed to hook another minnow out in the river. Now what are the odds of that.
After that bite slowed we switched to pitching hair jigs with and without meat and plastics to shallow sand. I’m sure the target species were there but all this produced were Sheepies, White Bass and oddly enough Largemouth Bass.
Considering we were looking for Walleye/Sauger we decided to start dragging 3-way rigs and stick baits. This technique produced two 17″ walleye in two separate locations as well as Sheepies and White Bass.
I laugh at myself. I was so focused on finding Walleye/Sauger and at the end of the day the two old boys tell me they had a ball catching all those Sheepie and White Bass. I just shake my head.
