I was wondering if any one has tried vertical jigging some Mister Twister Sassy Shads, or Berkley Power Bait shad, at Redwing/Bay City area? If so what colors worked best. and what structure did you catch the most walleye on?

    Thanks,

No. But I saw James do it on TV. YES I SWARE IT WAS HIM! From what I have read here-plastics work just as well as minnows under most conditions in the river. People seem to like purple. When I jig- I prefer minnows. 1 scoop of fatheads for $2 gets many fish in the boat. I think that most people like chartruese or yellow. I usually start with the clown (blue/pink/white) fireball jig. But if you are on fish and not having luck, keep changing colors. It helps to have someone else in the boat to try varied techniques and colors. More important that bait or color when jig fishing is staying 100% vertical. If you cant stay vertical after changing weight or jig shape-forget it and try something else.

Has anyone else fallen in love with the blue/pink/white? Or am I in the minority?

I’ve had some great catches on pink and white, especially in the fall when the water clears up a bit.

I have a good selection of that color you refer to as clown…. first I like multi colored heads, I figure its kind of “cheating” to get to try 2 or 3 colors at the same time, in addition to the tails color….. though it CAN drive you batty trying to define a pattern that may not exist…. basically with color there are days it makes ALL the difference….. and other days where it makes none……

as for the shad…. well yes… they can work great vertical jigged….. but guess what? I have found a vertical bucktail works even better most of the time….. and Hutch has an awesome selection… a few years ago I would NEVER have thought I did not need lots of bait.. but these days even though I have it (mosty because I feel kind of naked without it)… I dont use much bait…… trolling cranks, jigging bucktail and plastics like ringworms, shads, twisters and I hear super doos…… all work GREAT without bait… there are days when the little ones wont leave a minnow alone for even 2 minutes…. try these other methods and the little ones will either stop hitting or at worst not cause any problems… and the bigger fish will start nailing your stuff….. I know its sounds “fishy”… but its true……
